The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) deployed earlier this month a “robot soldier” on the separation line with Lebanon in a desperate attempt to trick Hezbollah.
The Lebanese group’s Central Media released on August 29 a video of the incident, which had taken place a week ago. The video shows a dummy soldier attacked by an unmanned ground vehicle moving amid a cloud of thick smoke on the separation line. Two Merkava IV battle tanks of the IDF were guarding the “robot soldier,” likely to make the trap more realistic.
Israel is expecting an attack by Hezbollah, which vowed to respond to the recent Israeli airstrikes on the Syrian capital, Damascus. A fighter of the Lebanese group was killed in the airstrikes.
The IDF likely hoped that Hezbollah would attack its “robot soldier” instead of carrying out a real military response on the separation line.
Last year, Hezbollah attacked Israeli troops in response to airstrikes on Damascus which killed two of its fighters. Back then, the IDF also attempted to trick the group by deploying “dummy soldiers” on the separation line. The attempt was a failure, just like the new one with the more fancy robot.

It’s called a decoy, militaries have been using such devices for centuries. During the second world war the Americans created a whole fictitious army, including air-filled canvas trucks and tanks to fool the Germans. Decoys can be use to both draw the enemy’s attention or draw the enemy’s fire. I have to say making a video about having and using them for the whole world to see is not the brightest idea.
