The Russian military has begun using a new type of cruise missiles that may be a copy of the Franco-British Storm Shadow, Ukrainian military analysts said on August 9.

The missile was first used a few days earlier in a strike on a target in the Nikolaev. Initially, Ukrainian military analysts thought that the missile was the S8000 Banderol, an air-launched supersonic cruise missile developed by Russia’s Kronshtadt Group that entered service earlier this year. However, later comparison showed that the missile was completely different.

The Banderol, which is guided via a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system (INS), has a range of 500 kilometers and carries a warhead weighing 150 g. It was designed to be launched by Orion combat drones and reportedly Mi-28NM attack helicopters.

With no similarities to the Banderol, Ukrainian military analysts speculated that the new Russian missile is a downsized copy of the Storm Shadow.

The Storm Shadow is a low-observable, long-range, air-launched cruise missile developed in the 1990s by Matra and British Aerospace, and now manufactured by MBDA. The missile features a GPS-aided INS with a terrain profile matching system. For terminal guidance, it is equipped with an imaging infrared scene-mapping area correlator system.

The maximum range of the Storm Shadow is 560 kilometers. However, Ukraine received the downgraded export version with a range of 250 kilometers. The Ukrainian Air Force has integrated the 1,300 kg cruise missile on its Soviet-era Su-24 fighter bombers.

Russia has already intercepted many Storm Shadows, and in many cases it retrieved the remains of the missiles to study them.

While the new Russian missile appears to have a low-observable design, it certainly is not that similar to the Storm Shadow. The coming days will likely unveil more information on this mysterious missile.

“it is equipped with an imaging infrared scene-mapping area correlator system.”
like height map in a game engine
high tech from the 90s is commonplace today.

twz website gave earlier info on the above article -dated may-12th.

80-90’s is the peak of military abilities and research. “caliber” was developed in this era, but production started 20 years later. 1200 km range with explosives and 2000-2500 with lighter nuclear warhead. no need in ss with 250/500 km range (400/1000 for scalp-er). 250 and 400 stands for export version.

not the oreshnik hypersonic missile designed in the 2020-,s nor the kh-47m2-kinzhal hypersonic nor even the 9k720 iskander.

Dragon of Bosnia

it is 150kg, not 150g. 150 kg for some purposes is pretty big warhead.

let’s compare with 80s: su-27 (base for su-35 and su-34), mig-29, t-72b (base for t-90 and t-72b3m – last modification), ifv-3 and apc-80 – all is still in use. add combat ships and submarines like projects 971. start of 885th project research — end of 80s. “iskander” – heir of “oka” from 80s. “caliber” and h-555 cruise missiles — projects from 80s as well as satellite navigation needed for precise strikes.

army and navy was much bigger, industry stronger, terms of building much smaller. 971th project — just 2 years from keel laying to enter in service like in china now. now it’s 7 years. the same is on the west. look at frigates “freedom” and “liberty”. both have weapon like a smaller corvette, failures in construction, bad quality of body and engines, but pentagon keep buying this crap, because money are already spent. new frigate will be italian version of franco-italian project fremm.

Dragon of Bosnia

you don’t understand how military technology works.

they should hand what they have of those systems to china so that china can mass produce them and sell them to everyone who dislikes the west inkl. the huthis. just think about the news that a misslile based on a francobritish system hit tel aviv… cause they had to use them against russia and that caused the technology beeing compromised.

ukraine didn’t get any downgraded storm shadow 250 km is the range of storm shadow.
the 560 km range is achieved by adding an extra fuel tank to it like an drop tank on an fighter jet.
ukraine has the same storm shadow/scalp-eg as france and uk has since it’s from the same stock.
there seems to be a general misconception that it has a standard range of 560km and it’s wrong probably because of a bad wikipedia article.
banderol doesn’t have a warhead of 150g it’s 150kg
