The Russian President summed up the results of the year during a large press conference combined with a direct line. This year’s broadcast lasted four and a half hours. In total, 2.48 million questions were submitted to it. Below is a selection of Vladimir Putin’s quotes on various topics.
About the military operation and the Kursk Region
Commenting on the progress of military operation in Russia’s Kursk Region, President Putin stated that Ukrainian troops made a mistake by attacking Russian territory and will soon be knocked out of there.
“The attack is going on along the entire front line on a daily basis. Our fighters are regaining territory by square kilometers.”
“I don’t want to name a specific date when they will knock the enemy out. Our guys are fighting right now. If they hear me, they will go [on the offensive] by this date, and they will not count with losses, so… A day or two doesn’t matter anymore.”
About the invulnerability of the hypersonic missile “Oreshnik”
As regards the meaning of the missile’s name, President recommended to address the Russian military. According to Vladimir Putin, this is a modern weapon, the principle of operation of which is based on previous projects, but has no analogues in the world.
“There is no chance to shoot down these missiles. If Western experts believe so [that it is possible], let them offer us and those in the United States who pay them, to conduct a high-tech duel of the XXI century. Let them determine the target in Kiev, and concentrate missile defense and air defense forces there. We are ready for such an experiment. And it will be exciting for us.”
About “weakened Russia” and Trump
A journalist for the US television channel NBC said that Russia is in a “weakened position” because a large number of Russians have died in Ukraine, there was an assassination of lieutenant general Igor Kirillov, and the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad, which Moscow supported, has fallen.
Asked about a “weakened Russia,” Putin quoted the American writer Mark Twain:
“Since you are an American, I want to recall a man and writer known to all, who once said: “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”
“Russia is at war with virtually every NATO country. One 155 mm shell two years ago cost €2,000. Now it costs €8,000. If things continue at this rate, not only 2% of expenditures will not be enough for military spending, 3% will be lacking.”
“You want to portray what is happening in Syria as a defeat. We went there so that a terrorist enclave would not be created there. On the whole, we have achieved our goal. And those groups that fought with Assad have changed. It is not without reason that a number of countries and the United States now want to establish relations with them. Why are you meddling if they are terrorist?”
The Russian president also noted that he has not yet seen Assad since his arrival in Moscow, but plans to do so.
As for a possible meeting with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin said he has not spoken to him at all in more than four years, but is ready to talk to the American leader-elect at any time.
“If we ever have a meeting with the newly elected president Mr. Trump, I am sure we will have something to talk about”.
About attacks on the church in Ukraine and “godless Jews”
Speaking of “godless cosmopolitans,” Putin blamed unbelieving Jews for the oppression of the Russian Orthodox Church.
“What is happening to the Russian Orthodox Church [in Ukraine] is a unique thing. A gross thing, a violation of the rights of believers. There is a tearing up of the church going on, it’s like a firing squad in front of the whole world. And the international community prefers not to notice it. Those who do it, I think it will come back on them. They are not even atheists, they believe in something, that there is no God. And these are not atheists, but people without any faith at all, godless people. Ethnic Jews, who saw them in the synagogue? Nobody’s seen them there. They’re kind of not Orthodox, because they don’t go to churches either. They’re not Islamic, because they hardly show up in mosques either. They are people without tribe, they do not care about anything that is dear to us and the overwhelming part of the Ukrainian people. They will leave someday and go to the beach instead of to church”.
Israel is the main beneficiary of Syria’s developments
“Israel is violating international law in Iran and Lebanon, occupies Syria and violates its sovereignty. I don’t know what Israel’s goal is in Gaza, but it is only condemnable.”
“We hope that Israel will withdraw from Syrian territory at some point, but now it is bringing more troops there. The impression is that not only are they not going to withdraw, but they are going to reinforce.”
About the change of himself after three years of military operation
“These three years, they were, of course, a serious test for all of us, the whole country. I started to joke less and almost stopped laughing.”
As for the international reaction to the Direct Line With Vladimir Putin, the West threw a tantrum.
In the United States, the Russian president was accused of a “demonstration of control,” while the Germany took offense at him for allegedly bullying it.
The newspaper Bild, in particular, which called the Direct Line “Putin’s big propaganda show,” was surprised by his statement that Germany lacks sovereignty because Germans sing songs in English.
The Washington Post, close to the U.S. Democratic Party, concluded that “Putin is using the Direct Line to consolidate his power and demonstrate his complete control over the country’s political scene.”
The French Le Figaro, in an attempt to thicken the colors, took out of context a part of Putin’s phrase: “Putin admitted that he does not know when Russia will be able to dislodge the Ukrainian army from Kursk”.
The Italian Corriere Della Sera, breaking from the ranks of the rabid, titled its text broadcast of Russian leader in a simple and quite truthful way: “The economy is developing despite external threats, we are close to our goals”.
