Disagreement Over Occupied Properties Sparks New Round Of Infighting Among Turkish-Backed Militants In Afrin

A new round of infighting among Turkish-backed militants erupted in the occupied area of Afrin on March 27, according to a new report of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

“A dispute surfaced between a group of fighters of the Khalid Ibn al-Walid Brigade on one side and a group of Faylaq al-Sham on the other side … They wanted to divide farms, belong to displaced civilians, in the town of Maydān Akbis,” the SOHR’s report reads.

The dispute lead to heavy clashes between the two groups. The SOHR said that at least one militant was injured in the clashes, which lasted fro several hours.

In 2018, the Turkish military and its Syrian proxies imposed full control of the area of Afrin in northern Aleppo after a fierce battle with Kurdish forces. The Turkish occupation forced more than 150,000 civilians, mostly Kurds, to flee the area.

The properties of these displaced civilians were occupied by Turkey’s proxies, according to Kurdish activists, who claim that Ankara is working to impose a long-term demographic change in the Syrian Kurdish area.
