Russian flags are raised over Velikaya Novoselka
Step by step, Russian forces are advancing towards the administrative borders of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Over the past 24 hours, the Russians have achieved a number of significant milestones and worsened the situation for the Ukrainian forces. The main part of the front today is in the direction of South Donetsk. The forces of the 36th Army, the 57th Independent Guards Motorised Rifle Brigade and the 40th Independent Guards Marine Brigade have completely seized Velikaya Novoselka.
It is a large urban-type settlement with a pre-war population of over 5500. It is quite difficult to defend as it is located at the mouth of the Kashlagach River (a right tributary of the Mokrye Yaly River).
The AFU command did not give the order to withdraw in time. The situation was similar during the defence of Ugledar and Kurakhovo. As a result, Ukrainian units were isolated in different parts of Velikaya Novoselka. The 110th Independent Mechanised Brigade suffered catastrophic losses. The garrison was cut in two. The encirclement in the south of the settlement was liquidated on 25 January. The flag of the Russian Federation was hoisted over the town hospital. The concentrated presence of Ukrainian servicemen is registered only in the northern part of Velikaya Novoselka. The AFU are retreating northwards across the Mokrye Yaly river towards the settlement of Burlatskoye.
The loss of the settlement has many serious strategic implications for Ukraine. The Russians can now advance towards the Dnepropetrovsk region. The first major settlement on their way is Pokrovskoye. It lies 50 kilometres north-west of Velikaya Novoselka. To the north, the first major town is also 50 kilometres away. This is Mezhevaya railway station (Dnepropetrovsk region). It is the supply line for Ukrainian army units in Donbass. Advancing to the north will endanger the AFU units holding the defences to the west of Kurakhovo near the settlements of Konstantinopol, Razliv, Ulakly and Dachne.
To the west of Kurakhovo, the situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is also deteriorating. The 8th Guards Army has entered Andreevka and is bypassing Dachnoye and Ulakly from the north. At the same time, the Ukrainians have abandoned a number of strongholds prepared before the start of the Special military operation. We can predict that the Ukrainian military will soon abandon Andreevka because of the topographical features of the terrain. The village is located in a low-lying area and is easily shelled from the direction of Russian-seized Petropavlovka. To the south of Andreevka is the small Volchya River. However, it is a geographical barrier that complicates logistics. Parallel to the attacks on Andreevka, there is a Russian advance from the direction of Zelenovka. According to a Ukrainian military officer with the call sign ‘Muchnoi’, Russian forces are ‘narrowing the gap’ north of Sukhiye Yaly and west of Kurakhovo.
Attempts to encircle Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) continue. In recent weeks, the Russian Army Command has succeeded in creating the conditions for an operational encirclement of the city. The forces of the “Centre” Army Group have established control over the settlement of Kotlino. The railway connection with Mezhevaya station (Dnepropetrovsk region) was carried out through it. By moving north of Kotlino, the Russians are able to launch FPV drone attacks on the E50 motorway and the village of Grishino. They also hit the railway line towards Pavlograd (Dnepropetrovsk region). The advance south of Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) has been slower. However, over the past 24 hours the Russians have managed to move north of Grodovka station towards platform 11.
There are reports of hasty preparations for the defence of the town of Pavlograd in the Dnepropetrovsk region. Fortifications are under construction. The problem, however, is that these defensive lines cannot be fully manned. Ukraine’s mobilisation resources are exhausted. The government is trying to remedy the situation with threats. For example, the deputy head of the recruitment centre of the Territorial Defence Forces, Igor Shvaika, said that those who did not serve in the AFU would lose a number of civil rights after the war. In particular, the right to get a bank loan, to defend a thesis and to hold managerial positions.
The operation to take the town of Toretsk (Dzerzhinsk) is nearing completion. The entire residential area is under the control of Russian troops. Fighting is taking place at the Toretskaya mine. Most of the infrastructure has already been abandoned by Ukrainian soldiers. More than half of the Krymskoye settlement on the outskirts of Toretsk (Dzerzhinsk) is in the hands of Russian forces. Within a few days, the entire territory of the city and the settlement will be cleared of the presence of the Ukrainian military. The capture of Toretsk (Dzerzhinsk) solves two tasks at once: ensuring the security of Gorlovka and access to Konstantinovka. After the operation in Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) is completed, the focus of the Russian command can be expected to shift to the Konstantinovka area. It can be pushed through from the south (Dzerzhinsk), south-west (Krasnoarmeysk) and east (Chasov Yar).
In the remaining parts of the front, the positional confrontation with the tactical advance of the Russian army continues. Ukrainian sources confirm that the Russians have crossed the Oskol River at Dvurechnaya, north of Kupyansk. It was not only infantrymen who managed to overcome the water obstacle. It is noted that the Oskol was forcibly crossed by heavy equipment. After the accumulation of forces we can expect increased pressure on Kupyansk from the north and an attempt to capture the city in parallel with the pressure on Kupyansk-Uzlovoy and the eastern outskirts of Kupyansk.
