Iranian strike drones Shahed are more and more often used by the Russian military in the war in Ukraine. Over the past week, drone strikes have targeted Ukrainian military facilities in the Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. In late September, Geranium UAVs (as drones from Iran were rebranded in Russia) destroyed several military facilities in the Odessa region, including the headquarters of the AFU South command in Odessa.
Experts note the difficulty of targeting UAVs with missile defense systems due to their speed and low flight altitude. A distinctive feature of the usage of the new UAVs is the striking of targets in the enemy rears, causing difficulties in supplying the Ukrainian army and disabling artillery and MLRS systems.
According to open sources, the Geranium-2 does not have its own video camera and is guided to the target by satellite navigation. In this regard, to improve the effectiveness of Geranium drones, the Russian military needs to solve the problem of early target detection with the fastest possible transmission of coordinates to the drone to inflict an attack.
It is also obvious that the use of kamikaze drones must be massive and systematic in order to cause sensitive damage to Ukrainian troops.
The exact number of UAVs provided by Iran is unknown. The conditions under which Russia received the drones, which inflict such sensitive strikes on the Ukrainian army, also remain unknown. According to some evidence, it may be about the transfer to Iran of a party of Russian SU-35 fighter jets, previously intended for sale to Egypt, but which did not arrive there due to U.S. sanctions. It is also unclear how quickly Russia will be able to set up production of the Geranium UAVs on its own territory.
Having entered service with the Russian military, the new Geranium-2 UAVs complement the Russian Cube and Lancet UAVs of the light class that are also deployed on the Ukrainian front lines. Apparently, the Geranium-2 is larger and heavier than the Cube or Lancet. It also carries a more powerful warhead and has an increased range. Thus, the Russian Army now has several barrage ammunition with different characteristics at its disposal. This makes it possible to increase the flexibility and effectiveness of the use of such weapons, as well as optimize the use of other striking means.
In fact, it is able to complement Russian long-range missiles, such as the famous Kalibr missiles that are launched by the Russian Navy from the Black Sea. The simplicity and cheapness of the UAVs, as well as their land launcher, give certain advantages. They have already proved their effectiveness against the small targets as artillery systems as well as against the enemy facilities like the military headquarters and warehouses in Odessa. The UAVs remain unnoticed by the Ukrainian air defences.
In any case, the significant increase in the size of the Russian armed forces after the mobilization, as well as the arrival of new types of weapons (including the Geranium UAVs, modern T-90M main battle tanks, and the new generation SU-57 fighters) allow us to conclude that the Kremlin is well prepared for the autumn-winter military campaign in Ukraine.

Iran, years under international embargo, with a population and recourse way smaller than Russia, was able to produce modern drones which Russia could not. So Iran very smart or Russia just unprepared?

Of course Russia does not need them. However, the buying of these drons helps a lot to encreases and to improve Iran economy and research.

First, there’s no such thing as wonder weapon or game changers (not counting the very first use of nuclear bombs). What counts is how you use them. These are very cheap weapon systems capable of doing many tasks of regular, larger and more expensive weapon systems. But to efficiently using them requires some changes in how you think and plan. Maybe it’s becoming clearer for some why we are so relaxed in modernizing our “legacy” airforce. We can discuss these topics more if there’s any interest.
I noticed that Russians use a nickname for Geran-2, “Persian Doritos”. :) What we saw so far are the plain flavour. There are Pistachio flavoured, Saffron and Caviar. The most deadly ones have a cool cat riding them; yeehaw! Those attacks are test runs and are performed with one or two drones in tandem. The party starts when they come in swarms… Do you remember the airplane with UH-60 scorts from Romania to Odessa? I hear it was carrying point airdefence systems. If correct, 2 points come forward: 1- Since they are new systems, Ukrainians probably lack the required training for them, so US or NATO personnel may operate them and 2- They have to have radars. So far I couldn’t find any new picture of oddly intact “downed” Mohajer-6 which Ukraine said shoot down near Odessa. I’d certainly published multiple pics of that drone from different angles and details had I shoot it down or captured it. We did it with every single American or Izzie drone we downed or captured. Let’s wait a few more days, eh?

My thoughts exactly, if these drones can carry anti-radar missiles they should use them to destroy remaining radars and S-300 and Buk’s. US converted bunch of Ukr. Mig-29 to carry HAARMs, I don’t understand why Russians did not suppress and destroy remains of long range Ukro air defense already? They started attacking them in February and then completely stopped for some reason, and now Russian AF is contained to sporadic low flying bomb runs, vulnerable to manpads.
Its not about should or should not. Iran, under years of embargo, can produce their own drones (all self made, unlike Turkey) while Russia, with all the resources can’t. So either credit to Iran or its kinda phatic from the Russian side.

We all heard that “Necessity is the mother of invention”. Because of decades of sanctions, embargo and threats we had to learn to think out of the box to solve the problems that other countries solve by buying (or strong-arming in case of Izzies) the required hardware or procedure from others. It was very hard, specially at the beginning where we lacked the necessary industries and specially military industrial base. We even couldn’t produce decent steel so we wouldn’t even dream of creating what today is a very dynamic and innovative industrial base if we could simply buy what we needed or more precisely, what we were being told we might need, like so many useless things we bought for insane price tags when Shah reigned.
Russia produced and produces world-class -if not the best- weapon systems. What they build (warfare)) is according to their military doctrine which evolved and shaped based on their ability, geography and in response to their adversaries, as did their rivals. Maybe they could do better but if you look at others, it seems the usual route for everyone. We didn’t have the luxury of funds, normal relations with other countries or even a relative safety so we too, had to do something with what we had. The result of pressure, threats, limited resources and thinking out of the box is what we see today.
I agree. Huge credit to Iran without berating Russia or any other country like Turkey. In addition to so many innovations in other fields, much of our new weapons are created with “out of the box” mindset. Having a large arsenal of missiles and drones is the result of not being able to buy/produce military jets. Making them resistant to jamming is the result of not having access to reliable GPS and communication satellites. Deadly, accurate, long range torpedoes and anti-ship missiles is the result of not having a large navy and airforce. Loitering air defence is the result of small military budget and overall accuracy of weapons has a religious and humane reason to avoid “collateral damage”. Most important of them all, we hated to sit idly or surrender so we needed to do something about it.
Good points, Iran is well prepared. Even the military factories are build in freaking mountains or deep under ground the ground, out of reach of air attacks. No, there’s no shortage of amazing pilots. If you are interested, take a look at Iran’s aerial operations in the 1980-1988 war. Some of them are among the most daring and complicated operations in the history, performed with perfection. To name a few, operations Kaman-99 (Alborz), H3, Sultan, Baghdad and Burning Sword (this one is kept in total silence. 9 month before operation Opera).

The real reason was we came under sanction and embargo immediately after the 1979 revolution. American advisors saboutaged many weapon systems before they leave (radars, Hawk systems, F-4s, F14s and Phoenix missiles and so on) and western countries withheld delivering the things we bought and paid in full. Naturally they did their best so we didn’t have access to spare parts and replacements. As you can imagine, a war puts stress on the equipment and takes its toll, we couldn’t buy anything new and had to great lengths to acquire parts with insane prices, so we had to be conservative on how we used what we had. In numerous stances our pilots traded their lives to bring the damaged jets to the tarmac instead of jumping, they willingly did it because they knew a damaged plane can be repaired but a destroyed one is lost. Because of scarcity of RF-4s to take pictures, our drone program was born. Because of huge gaps in radar coverage and no AWACS we used F-14s as some sort of aerial warning system, so we thought about other methods to compensate for radar coverage. Saddam attacked our cities with SCUDs and variants, we didn’t have anything. Qaddafi gave us 20 SCUDs (bought some from other places, total near 80), couldn’t use them because we lacked training. Hafez al-Assad sent some instructors but they left without finishing the training, so we did it by trial and error. One hero, shahid Tehrani Moqaddam advised the commanders to keep a couple of missiles and not fire them. By dissecting them, our missile program was born.
Our boys and girls managed to keep the airforce jets (and other equipment) airworthy during the war and kept improving them afterward. The problem of parts was still present and the US did everything they could, including shredding all of their own F-14 fleet to keep ours on the ground. In 1991 some of Saddam jets fled Iraq and came to Iran, we kept them as a part of compensation for war and bought some used Migs and Sukhois from former Soviet republics and some Chinese knock offs. These are the newer planes in the airforce. You can take a look on the airplanes of Iran’s airforce. Interestingly, our boys kept the Mirage F-1s airworthy and upgraded them without knowing the first thing about them.
We knew that our airforce can’t operate as a classic one in a war with a peer or stronger adversary so we found other roles for it and learnt how to build and use replacements in form of missiles and drones instead. Those old jets like Phantoms are still deadly (and should be taken seriously according to sober American analysts, because of their speed, capacity and unknown upgrades) as platforms of other weapon systems. In parallel we started to develop a fighter based on one the most simple and reliable platforms, the F-5 (which in the US evolved into F-18). But developing a jet when there’s no other costumer is not cheap, so we took our time and put the focus in the replacement, while continued to make slow progress.
It’s urgent to re-setup the production of the old V-1 missile with INS/GPS guide. It’s the cheaper missile you could have and has a 850 kg warhead.

Hey Z-for-Victory, Pulsejets have promising application as backup thrust for single engine fighters. If such modernized V1 also had a non-weapons mode (non-launch), then a single engine jet, such as a Mig-23/27 carrying two such V1-like missiles under the wing could limp back into friendly territory, probably even to base, using the thrust supplied by the two pulsejets.
Or, on a regular flight without an engine failure, the two V1’s could be used after a sortie into the front, once back over friendly territory.
The fuel on these modernized V1’s could be a small fraction of the WW2 V1’s. Just a range of 100km-150km is quite practical already as a shorter range stand off weapon.
