On May 21, a double-tap attack targeted a local market in the town of al-Busayrah in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the town’s market in the late hours of the day. When people gathered in the scene to assess the damage a booby-trapped motorcycle, which was parked nearby, exploded.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a child was killed and 15 people were injured. Many of the wounded are reportedly women and children.
There was no immediate claim for the attack. Nevertheless, ISIS remains the main suspect. The terrorist group’s cells are known to be highly-active in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, that’s controlled by the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The SDF and the U.S.-led coalition carried out a series of joint security operations in different parts of Deir Ezzor in the last few weeks. Security situation improved. However, the area is still far from being safe.
