On December 14, 80 fighters of the Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield (ES) forces defected and joined the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the city of Manbij in the northern Aleppo countryside, according to the Kurdish Hawar News Agency (ANHA).

ANHA said that the Manbij Military Council (MMC) coordinated the defection of the fighters, and moved them safely to the SDF-held areas. The sources also claimed that 80 other fighters of the ES defected last week also with a help from the MMC .

From its side, Colonel Haitham al-Afisi a commander of the ES told the Syrian pro-opposition news outlet Enab Baladi that only 5 fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) defected and fled to the SDF areas with their families. Colonel al-Afisi claimed that the defectors are known for their bad behavior and that they defected because they want to go back to their hometowns in Deir Ezzor governorate.

In 2017 hundreds of fighter defected from both sides. However, the most notable case was the defection of Talal Silo, the former spokesman for the SDF, on November 15. After he joined the ES, Silo revealed to the Turkish Intelligence dozens of SDF spies among the ranks of the ES, according to Syrian opposition sources.

Imagine what would happen to Syria if these different groups have defeated Assad.

dutchnational

Taliban/Afhanistan?

Joe

Libya to be precise

dutchnational

Agreed. Somalia too comes into mind. In fact, most failed states qualify.

Joao Alfaiate

But Israel and the US would have been happy.

SDF is an interesting movement in the history, aside from the feminist tenet. They have quickly installed their form of governance. Rather than rule by religious quackery, it is self rule and democracy. Seems to have stabilized the region in record time.

Daniel Castro

“self rule and democracy”

More like ethnic cleansing, tyranny and corruptocracy.

Leavium shad

Then please be my guest and give us evidence on so called “ethnic cleansing” that if you have any evidence of course? if not! then please do not post BS statements thinking you can get away with it because I can assure there are many of us who will defend SDF against turks with fake accounts :D

Alejandro

Hasbara BS defending their SDF mercenaries detected.

Leavium shad

comments like this proves that you and your friend are just plain dumb and have nothing to back their own statement.

Daniel Castro

Or we just don’t have enough respect for you to engage in a debate, be my guess, I really don’t care.

One of the big differences between SDF and many opposition groups and Iranian proxies is that they do not have a religious agenda at all nor an ethnic agenda.

That is to say that in principal all genders, ethnicities and religions are co-equal and treated as such. Laws based upon gender, ethnicity and religion have been abolished. Much has been invested in restarting education in former IS areas and in making education in the mother language(s) of arab, kurd, syriac instead of Baath arab.

As SDF is a military coalition, there is un underlying political alliance that organizes the region and has organised local, regional (already held oct/nov) and soon supraregional elections.

Manbij, Tabqah, Raqqah and DeZ did not participate in those elections but will be given the choice to join or not, most likely in 2018 (Manbij) and 2019 (the others)

Gypsies same as Gypsies thats what the Kurdish are

dutchnational

You know, gypsies, as in Sindi and Roma people, are two peoples of Indian origin, speaking an indo germanic language based upon sanskrit.

As such they are relatives of kurds and persians.

If you mean to say kurds are of nomadic origin, the your remark is pointless as both turks and arabs are also of nomadic origin and, to some extent, still are.

Alejandro

As long as they keep being paid by their gringo, saudí and Israel masters.

dutchnational

You mean like Assad is paid for by iran and Russia, Islamists by Turkey, Qatar etc.

Is there any party in Syria that does not get paid?

dutchnational

Total defections from Euphrates shield the last four weeks over 300, acc to Anha. Estimating ES forces at some 10k (wikipedia), that means ES forces lost some 3% of total forces to defections in just one month. Imagine what that would mean in half a year if that continues. Losing 20% of ones forces without one shot being fired. Not only losing but going over to your opponents.

This has major implications for an eventual attack by ES forces on Manbij or Afrin. Imo not going to happen.

Jim Martin

No ultimate surprise here as the SDF/YPG/YPJ is not Kurdish dominated, it is Syrian and more so b ythe day as the only real future that all Syrians can realistically count on; a real one!

dutchnational

While I agree with your sentiments one must admit that the kurds are at the least a driving force within the SDF, though that in itself does not have to be something bad. Any organisation or alliance has a driving force so why not the SDF? They are the most cohesive force within Syria outside of Assads clique

juan carlos ayala

a la primera oportunidad ellos van a rendirse al ejercito sirio como lo están haciendo muchos

nshah

Shit.. Erdo should had paid them more..!
