On the night of August 25, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted a major attack on the Russian territories. 42 aircraft-type Ukrainian UAVs targeted the Crimean peninsula, while the modified S-200 missile was destroyed over the Kaluga region, along with several more UAVs.
Amid the recent escalation in the western part of Crimea, it was clear that the Ukrainian military will continue attempts to launch larger attacks on the peninsula. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, last night, the AFU launched 42 UAVs to attack the Crimean Republic. The operation failed. All drones were destroyed by Russian forces. Nine UAVs were shot down by the Russian Air Defence Forces, and 33 more were suppressed by electronic warfare means. All of them crashed without reaching their targets. The local authorities confirmed the attack, claiming that there was no damage to civilian infrastructure as a result of the attack.
The Crimean peninsula has been targeted by Ukrainian UAVs almost on a daily basis. All Ukrainian attacks are closely coordinated by NATO intelligence which is monitoring the Black sea region. However, this is not enough to break through Russian air defences and Ukrainian UAVs do not reach their targets.
At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported the destruction of the modified missile for the S-200 air defence system. It was detected and destroyed by air defence means in the Russian Kaluga region. The Ministry claimed that the missile targeted “civilian facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation.” The Ministry did not provide any other details, no injuries or damage were reported.
Upgraded S-200 missiles, used for offensive strikes, can reach the ground targets at a range of up to 600 km. However, the accuracy of these strikes is very low. These missiles were decommissioned by the Ukrainian army about a decade ago, but were stored in warehouses and were subsequently modified.
The Ministry of Defense has previously reported on attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to attack Russian territory with modified S-200 missiles. For example, on August 18, Russian air defence forces shot down the one that targeted Crimea.
The Governor of Kaluga reported that the air defense systems were working in the Maloyaroslavets and Zhukovsky districts of the region.
The local sources also claimed the destruction of several Ukrainian UAVs in the Kaluga and Tula regions. They could reportedly target the Shaikovka airfield, where the Tu-22M3 strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces are deployed.
