The M982 Excalibur extended range guided artillery rounds are potentially the most dangerous part of the United States military aid to Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Militia told TASS on January 14.
The Excalibur round, which was jointly developed by BAE Systems and Raytheon, is guided by a GPS-aided inertial navigation system. It has a circular error probable of less than four meters.
The round can be fired from several 155 mm howitzers which were supplied to Kiev forces after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine, including the self-propelled PzH 2000 and AHS Krab as well as the towed M777.
“This is probably the most dangerous part of the delivery. These munitions are equipped with a seeker and can adjust their flight path upon approaching the target. They are GPS-and inertial-guided,” DPR People’s Militia spokesman told the Russian news agency.
According to the spokesman, counter-battery fire and strikes on Excalibur rounds caches are the most effective countermeasures.
“There can be only one countermeasure – effective counter-battery activities, with strikes at warehouses where those munitions are stored and at vehicles transporting them to launchers. They must be prevented from ever being delivered to firing positions,” he said.
In November, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that an Excalibur round was successfully intercepted over the Sumy region. Back then, the ministry didn’t specify what air defense system was used to shot down the guided artillery round, or provide footage of the interception.
The United States and Canada have supplied Ukraine with hundreds of Excalibur rounds, so far. On January 6, the Pentagon announced that it will be providing Kiev forces with 500 additional rounds as a part of a new military aid package worth over $3 billion.
Good thing the Russians are picking off all the Howitzers and getting those pick up’s. They like those.
Ukraine is running out of troops, rapidly.
They are running out of 70-year-old geezers to throw into the meat-grinder. All the Ukrainian men of draft age hi-tailed it to Poland.
Excalibur just only copycat of Krasnopol round. US may be obtained knowhow from Ukraine and former Warsaw pact countries.
US never invented anything, same as british. They only steal, copy and raketeer.
Actually the british had some brilliance in the past.
But when they say “jointly witht he uSA and…” it means it was tolen by the USA and the just pay them by buying a small number from the company they stole from and give them some recognition.
I tell that because i know … US army bought a lot of small numbers of our comanies vehicles … and eventually gave them away to some small nation … or terrorist group.
Yes. USAF still fly almost exclusively Boeing 707 planes for reconnaissance. They were designed when Hitler was still wagging his dick in front of cameras as Zelensky does today.
And they keep rebilling DoD for $355 million a pop for refurbishing and renaming them as something new.

Same with Yak-201. Lockheed Martin had a joint venture with Yakovlev Design Bureau. Yakovlev Design Bureau designed it to DoD requirements. Lockheed Martin produces it. Only later it was renamed to F-35 to match DoD nomeclature.

Excalibur was actually developed in Sweden by Bofors just like the 155 Bonus rounds. There not at all any copies of Krasnopol.

Dear War,
not. I am analyzing weapons systems last 40 years. Excalibur is GPS and INS guided. Krasnopol is terminally guided by reflected laser ray.
So Krasnopol is concept copy of Copperhead. Excalibur is something different. Difficult to shot down because fast approaching and small objects.
Russian Army desperately needs even some primitive form of APS for their tanks. Without this, their tanks losses will be very high.
Probably added depleted uranium
not the case. Excalibur are used against stationary targets and for use the special extra long range, they are fired high. DU ammo is used against armored vehicles (steel plate or mixt or reactive) and only with direct (low) fire.
These will probably increase when Sweden sends the Archer Artillery System that is very mobile and therefore not subject to counter-battery fire and has a magazine of 21shell and 126 charges. I wouldn’t be surprised if the M982 Excalibur and 155 BONUS production working more shifts here in Sweden.
Also good thing is to set dummy (mock) targets of various sorts. Ofc this is not easy since those rounds are only provided in limited quantity and very expensive, and i imagine they will be used seldom, only on higher value targets.
Darebácky štát USA neustále provokuje Rusko. Rusko by malo na revanš dodať Iskander pre Assadove vojská aby vyprášili zločincov a teroristov z USA zo Sýrie!!!
Probably added depleted uranium
Why Russia doesn’t supplie US with posaidons and sarmats????
why can’t china make these for russia?
They should all be destroyed before being put into service.
