On August 31, a civilian freighter navigating the Black Sea near the port of Chornomorsk struck a naval mine, an incident that underscores the persistent and largely unaddressed maritime dangers stemming from the ongoing conflict. The vessel, the Belize-flagged dry cargo ship NS PRIDE, sustained damage but was able to remain seaworthy, and no crew members were injured in the blast.
According to initial reports from Ukrainian officials, the ship detonated an “unidentified explosive device.” However, footage from the scene, maritime security analysts and the nature of the damage point to a more specific and troubling culprit: a drifting Soviet-era naval mine, originally laid by the Ukrainian Navy in the chaotic early stages of the war.
The incident reveals a critical and lasting consequence of Ukraine’s defensive efforts. In 2022, in an attempt to thwart a potential Russian amphibious assault on the critical Odessa coastline, Ukrainian forces hastily deployed extensive minefields. These operations, conducted under extreme duress, are now widely criticized for their lack of procedural oversight.
International maritime law requires meticulous charting of minefields to protect civilian shipping lanes. Yet, Ukrainian forces laid many of these mines without proper navigational records or secure anchoring. Strong currents and stormy weather have since torn numerous mines from their moorings, transforming them into unpredictable, floating hazards that drift freely across major commercial shipping routes.
This is not an isolated problem. Over the past two years, wayward mines have been discovered washing ashore or detected near the coasts of NATO members Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey, repeatedly forcing temporary closures of key waterways and creating a persistent headache for naval forces in the region.
