Early on October 18, the United States military thwarted an attack targeting its forces in Iraq, intercepting two drones over Ayn al-Assad Air Base in the western province of al-Anbar, two American officials told Reuters.
The unnamed officials declined to identify who was suspected of the drone attack, which came as Washington was heightening alert for activities by Iranian-backed armed factions amid escalation in the Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war.
Ayn al-Assad Air Base hosts hundreds of U.S. troops, who are allegedly deployed in Iraq to counter ISIS and train government forces.
The attack on the air base came just a few hours after Palestinian health officials said that more than 500 civilians were killed in an Israeli strike that targeted the Christian-run al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. The attack also took place as the U.S. President Joe Biden was flying to Israel to signal support for its war against Hamas.
The Hamas Movement held the U.S. directly responsible for the massacre. Similar accusations were made by the remaining parties of the so-called Axis of Resistance, including Iraqi armed factions.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched missile strikes against Ayn al-Assad air base in response to the assassination of its Quds Force Commander Qassim Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, in 2020. In later years, Iraqi armed factions launched several drone and rocket attacks at the air base.
The last attack on the base was likely carried out by Iraqi armed factions in response to the Israeli massacre in Gaza. More attacks could target U.S. troops in Iraq and other parts of the Middle East in coming days and weeks, if Washington continues to support Israel’s war on the Strip.
