Late on March 4, an armed drone dropped munitions at the government-held village of Shathah in the northwestern countryside of Syria’s Hama.
Material losses were reported after the attack as several houses in the village were hit by the drone’s munitions. However, there were no casualties.
Shathah is located some 11 kilometers to the south of the town of Juring, where a large camp of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is located. Russian forces are usually present at the key camp that provides fire support to the western front with the Greater Idlib region.
The drone was likely launched by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib. The terrorist group attacked government-held villages and towns around the region with drones on several occasions in the last few months.
The attack coincided with a large blast that rocked the town of Ma’arrat Misrin in the northern Idlib countryside. The blast wiped out an improvised rocket factory of HTS. While some Syrian activists said that the blast was the result of a strike, others said that it was caused by an incident or sabotage.
Over the past week, HTS militants raided two positions of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) on Taurus mountain in the northern Lattakia countryside and near the town of Urum al-Sughra in the western countryside of Aleppo. The terrorist group alleged that 16 soldiers were killed in both attacks.
The terrorist group escalated its attacks last December in what appears to be an attempt to sabotage Russian efforts to restore relations between Ankara, who maintains a large military presence in Greater Idlib, and Damascus.
