The Anadolu Agency released on April 5 video footage showing the aftermath of recent Israeli strikes on T4 Air Base in central Syria.

The air base, which is the largest and most fortified in the country, was attacked on March 21 and 25, and more recently on April 2. The first and second waves of strikes also targeted the nearby Palmyra military airport, while the third wave hit the Hama military airport.

All there air bases were recently scouted by the Turkish military as part of a planned joint defense pact with Syria’s new Islamist-led interim government, according to a recent report by Reuters, which also revealed that a planned visit by Turkish officers to T4 and Palmyra on March 25 was cancelled after the second Israeli attack.

Another recent report by the Middle East Eye revealed Turkish plans to deploy air defenses and combat drones at the targeted air bases.

The footage released by the Anadolu Agency, which was apparently taken by a drone, showed damage to T4’s hardened aircraft shelter, decommissioned fighter jets and radar systems.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz called the last wave of strikes on April 2 a warning that “we will not allow the security of the State of Israel to be harmed.”

On the very same day, Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Ankara of seeking to establish a “Turkish protectorate” in Syria.

Later on April 4, an Israeli official told Hebrew media that the country was not looking for a military confrontation with Turkey in Syria, but stressed that the establishment of Turkish ground, naval or air bases in the war-torn country will not be allowed.

Turkey’s only reaction was to condemn recent Israeli attacks on Syria and call on it to withdraw from all occupied territories in the south of the country, including those captured by the Israeli military after the fall of the Assad regime last December.

While Turkey faced many challenges while spreading its influence in several parts of the Middle East over the last two decades, none even comes close to the challenge now posed by Israel in Syria. A settlement may be the only out of this situation for Ankara, as a confrontation could prove to be extremely costly, both militarily and politically.
