On the night of September 9-10, 2025, Polish airspace was violated by an incursion of dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This event occurred during a large-scale Russian nighttime attack on military-industrial targets in western regions of Ukraine and sparked a sharp international reaction. This is reportedly the first time in NATO’s history that the Alliance’s air forces participated in destroying Russian targets over a member state’s territory.
Radars detected 19 Russian drones crossing the country’s border, according to Polish authorities. The Polish military scrambled fighter jets and activated air defense systems. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the “operation involved Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS aircraft, tanker aircraft, and German Patriot systems.”
As a result, three drones were shot down. Debris from the aircraft was found in several voivodeships, predominantly in the border Lublin Voivodeship, which borders Ukraine and Belarus. One of the drones crashed onto a private house in the village of Wyręki-Wola, damaging the roof and a parked car. According to Polish media, fragments of seven drones and parts of one missile were found on the country’s territory.
One of the drones flew about 300 km within Polish airspace and, having exhausted its entire fuel supply, crashed in the town of Mnichków. Another drone fell in the village of Chusnovka. Debris from other downed “Geran” drones was found in the villages of Chesniki and Wyręki-Wola

Polish authorities characterized the incident as an “unprecedented in scale violation of airspace” and an “act of aggression” that created a real threat to the safety of citizens. Prime Minister Donald Tusk immediately convened an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers and held consultations with Mark Rutte. Poland initiated the invocation of Article 4 of the NATO Charter, which provides for consultations among member states in the event of a threat to their territorial integrity or security.
The incident sparked a wide range of interpretations and theories, reflecting various political interests and positions of the involved parties.
1. The Version of a Deliberate Russian Provocation
This version is promoted by Poland, Ukraine, some EU and NATO countries. They claim that Russia deliberately directed drones into Polish airspace with the aim to:
- “Probe” NATO’s defenses and assess the speed and effectiveness of the Alliance’s response to a sudden threat.
- Apply pressure on the West to force it to abandon support for Ukraine and accept Russian peace terms.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk directly called the event a “provocation”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that “more and more facts point to the non-accidental nature of such movement,” and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, claimed it was a “deliberate, not accidental, violation.”
2. Technical Error and EW Impact
This version is put forward by Russia and Belarus. They suggest that the drones accidentally deviated from their course due to the impact of Electronic Warfare (EW) systems.
- The Russian Ministry of Defense categorically denies any intentionality of the incident, stating that “targets for engagement on Polish territory were not planned.” The department emphasizes that the maximum flight range of the UAVs used does not exceed 700 km, making their targeted flight deep into Polish territory physically impossible.
- Belarus stated that its air defense forces tracked drones that had “lost course as a result of electronic warfare measures by the parties.” Minsk also claims it had warned Poland and Lithuania in advance about the approach of ‘unknown aircraft.
- The Lithuanian Minister of Defense also expressed the opinion that the incident was most likely accidental.
This version is indirectly supported by the type of drones found in Poland. They are “Geran” (Geranium) drones—Russian decoy UAVs designed to disorient air defense systems. They carry no payload and are not reconnaissance drones, which casts doubt on the version of a deliberate reconnaissance or strike operation.

3. Internal Political Provocation and Power Struggle in Poland
This hypothesis links the incident to the escalation of an internal political conflict in Poland between the pro-European Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the pro-Trump President Karol Nawrocki. Tusk, seeking to consolidate power and weaken the nationalist opposition, could use the theme of the “Russian threat” to unite society and strengthen his own position. The sharp reaction to the incident allows him to present himself as a decisive defender of the nation.
4. A Western Provocation to Influence Trump
According to this version, the incident could have been orchestrated and used by the “war party” in the West to derail potential peace agreements between the US and Russia.
- After the meeting between Putin and Trump in Alaska, information emerged about a possible compromise plan for Ukraine, which involved the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territory of Donbas.
- Such an option is unacceptable to Ukraine, hawkish circles in the EU and the US, who seek to continue the confrontation with Russia.
- Escalating the drone incident and talks of “Russian aggression against NATO” are intended to pressure Trump to abandon rapprochement with Putin and take a tougher stance by imposing new sanctions and increasing military support for Ukraine. Republican Congressman Joe Wilson has already called for sanctions that would “cripple the Russian war machine.”
5. Distraction from the EU’s Internal Problems
Another version suggests that the incident could have been orchestrated by pro-war factions in the West in coordination with the Kyiv regime to create a media frenzy to divert attention from internal crises in Europe, such as mass protests in France, economic difficulties, and the rise in popularity of right-wing populists. Creating the image of an external enemy is a proven way to consolidate society and shift focus from internal problems to external threats.
Despite harsh rhetorical statements, the Alliance has so far avoided qualifying the event as an attack, indicating a desire to avoid direct confrontation with Russia.
The key factor determining further developments will be the position of the United States and personally President Donald Trump. If Washington, under pressure from “hawks,” accepts the version of a deliberate provocation, it could lead to a new round of sanctions and increased military support for Ukraine.
This, however, would bury any hopes for a near-term peaceful settlement. If Trump ignores calls for escalation and continues to seek dialogue with Moscow, it could cause a serious crisis in transatlantic relations. However, as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán rightly noted, living in the shadow of war is fraught with risks, and the only way to avoid them in the future is to achieve a lasting peace, not a slide into a new major war.
