A Brazilian drug gang leader, Clauvino da Silva, 42, attempted to escape prison by dressing up as his teenage daughter, Ana Gabriele Leandro da Silva, 19.
He was caught. He also left his daughter inside the prison.

On a more serious and regrettable note, he was found dead in his cell on the after he was caught. He was caught on August 4th, and was found dead in his cell on the morning of August 6th.
According to information from the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration, the trafficker hanged himself with a sheet. The Fire Department and the Civil Police were sanctioned.
Clauvino tried to escape from the Gabriel Ferreira Castilho prison, Bangu 3, a unit that houses prisoners from Rio’s largest criminal faction. After the episode, he was placed in isolation in Bangu 1, Rio’s highest security prison. The trafficker was alone in the cell. Clauvino, who had been sentenced to nearly 73-years in prison, tried to escape last Saturday wearing a latex mask, wig and women’s clothing.
His daughter, Ana Gabriele Leandro da Silva, is suspected of having helped her father in his escape attempt, according to Brazilian media. She will be tried and faces a possible sentence of 6 months to 2 years in prison.

She visited him on August 4th, before he tried to escape.
Eight other visitors, including one pregnant woman, are also suspected to have assisted the criminal.
Clauvino da Silva, if he had not taken his life, would only face administrative sanctions, since a criminal act would constitute that he attempted to escape, while also harming others, provided for in the Penal Code. He didn’t harm anybody during his escape attempt. Plus, increasing his approximately 73-year long prison sentence to anything longer simply probably seemed needless.
Clauvino da Silva, known as Ronca e Baixinho, already had another escape in his past. He was one of 31 prisoners who escaped from the sewer of the Vicente Piragibe Penal Institute in the Gericino Complex in February 2013. He was arrested a month after the escape in Angra dos Reis.
According to anonymous sources, despite his attempts to escape prison, Clauvino caused no problems and was touted as a calm detainee. On the streets, however, he had a very different profile: according to authorities, the drug dealer was extremely violent.

Spanish media lost no time to add a little bit of flavor to the Brazilian story, with El Pais reporting the following:
“Brazilian prisons have become a major headache for President Jair Bolsonaro, who pledged to take strong action against crime and violence.”
The newspaper recalled that at least 57 people died in a riot on July 30th. Out of those 16 were decapitated. The five-hour prison riot took place at the Altamira Regional Recovery Center in southwestern Pará.
“More than a dozen were beheaded. Brazil’s incarcerated population has multiplied by eight in three decades to reach 750,000 prisoners,” the newspaper reported.
According to the Superintendence of the Pará Penitentiary System, detainees from the same criminal faction broke into the prison annex at 7 am local time, where there were members from a rival faction, and set fire to the place.
Smoke filled the annex and some detainees died of suffocation. The riot only ended around 12pm. Two correctional officers were held hostage for an hour but were released.

- Antonio Trindade penal institute, had 25 killed on May 27th.
- Puraquequara jail, had 6 killed on May 27th.
- Provisional Detention Centre for Men, had 5 killed on May 27th.
- Rival factions from the Brazil drug trade were responsible for all of these.
Clearly, there is a massive problem with drug trade factions, as well as massive issues with the Brazilian prison system. It is unclear what actions are being undertaken, since reports of high death counts in results of prison riots are somewhat “common.”
