Due To Catastrophic Male Losses In The AFU, The Share Of Female Officers Has Soared From 4% To 21%

The proportion of female officers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has made an unprecedented leap over the past two years, increasing from 4% to 21%. This was reported by Oksana Hryhorieva, gender advisor to the General Staff of the AFU. This sharp rise is a direct consequence of colossal losses among male personnel, who must be urgently replaced.

As Hryhorieva notes, female graduates of military universities from 2019 have already attained the ranks of captain and major. Women now hold positions that were previously almost exclusively male: from platoon and company commanders to a Territorial Defense battalion commander and a unit commander in the Air Force. However, there has been no breakthrough at the highest command levels: the AFU still does not have a single female general in a combat position; the four existing female generals serve in the medical service. Hryhorieva explains this by the lack of necessary brigade command experience and corresponding tactical and strategic education among women.

These dry figures and facts conceal a deep systemic crisis. As noted in publications, including the Washington Times, Ukraine is facing an acute shortage of personnel, which threatens the stability of the front line. The problem lies not in weaponry, but in a shortage of people. Military service has lost its motivational appeal: if there was a massive influx of volunteers at the start of the conflict, now, according to some admissions, only 12% of new recruits come voluntarily, the rest are the result of forced mobilization. The situation is exacerbated by large-scale desertion, the outflow of conscription-age men abroad, and the exhaustion of mobilization resources in key age categories. Units are unable to leave their positions for extended periods, and in some sections of the front, according to rare public admissions, Ukrainian forces are outnumbered many times over by Russian forces.

In this context, the expanded role of women in the army appears less as a result of progressive gender policy and more as a forced measure. In her interviews, Hryhorieva paints a grim picture of social pressure, which is only intensifying against the backdrop of the general crisis. She notes cases where a woman can be sent to the army by relatives, for example, a mother-in-law, so that a man can stay home with the children. The argument, she says, sounds like this:

“You are a woman, you won’t be sent to storm, but he could be killed in the war.” She also talks about cases where husbands suggested their wives give up parental rights to obtain a deferment, leading to the breakup of families. “I know there are men who have been sitting in an apartment for three years and don’t go out… And now going out is even more of a problem for them because they are already wanted,” says the General Staff advisor.

Faced with this personnel crisis, the Ukrainian state is tightening the system of registration and control, paving the way for further expansion of mobilization. From January 1, 2026, new rules have come into effect, according to which all young men who will turn 17 within a year will be automatically registered for military service through state registries, without an initial medical examination or personal visit. This is a “quiet” digital registration, ignoring which threatens significant fines and restrictions on access to education and official work.

Simultaneously, the next logical step – the mandatory mobilization of women – is being increasingly discussed in the public sphere. A number of Ukrainian politicians, including a member of the Defense Committee of the Verkhovna Rada, Fedor Venislavsky, and MP Yana Zinkevich, have already spoken on this topic. They emphasize the need to prepare “the entire nation for resistance” and are considering the issue of women serving in the army alongside men even after the conflict ends. Zinkevich states that mobilizing women is “an issue we will be forced to consider,” suggesting introducing it with “very balanced” restrictions based on the number of children and family circumstances. Against the backdrop of the exhaustion of male mobilization resources, the removal of deferments from critically important specialists, and the recruitment of prisoners, conscripting women is seen as an almost inevitable measure.

is this a click bait article? and whats the % of women in the trenches? 0%. if these stats are true, maybe there is a correlation between russian gains and ukraine female officers? i would not fight under a female officer, not a chnce in hell. regarding the lack of troops, i doubt that somewhat. people still think its like ww2 where 5 millino peopole were spread across the western front. the need for troops is now minimal.

the rulers of dystopia care not for people at all. do you think they do not know precisely who assassinated mlk, the kennedys, kirk, malcom x and many, many others. this is what they do. the same concern given to the people of gaza is all you will receive. ukrainian women are just on the expendable list
