On February 14, a Saudi aid plane landed in Syria’s quake-stricken Aleppo, in the first reported arrival from the Kingdom to government-held areas during the country’s 11-year war.
The plane which departed King Khalid International Airport, carried 35 tons and 322 kilograms of medical supplies, food and shelter kits, according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA). A delegation from the Saudi Red Crescent escorted the aid.
The aid was reportedly delivered on the orders of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
“The directives given to us from the leadership in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is to help the brotherly Syrian people affected [by the earthquake] across Syria,” a member of the Saudi delegation told Syrian state television.
The official, who was not identified, said that the aid plane was the first of several set to arrive over the upcoming few days.
A second aid plane, carrying another 35 tons of medical supplies, food and shelter, did land in Aleppo International Airport on February 15.
The overall death toll from the February 6 Turkish-Syrian earthquake has topped 41,000, more than 5,714 of them in Syria. The city of Aleppo was badly affected by the natural disaster, which displaced thousands of families there.
Before February 14, Saudi Arabia had sent aid only to opposition-held parts in Syria. On February 13, a convoy of 12 trucks arrived in the devastated town of Jandaris in the northern Aleppo countryside, according to Saudi state-owned Al-Arabiya Al-Hadath.
Saudi Arabia was among the first Arab countries to sever its relations with Syria and voice its support for the 2011 uprising. Later, the Kingdom played a key role in financing and arming Syrian rebels.
However, a recent report by the Syrian daily Al-Watan revealed ongoing efforts by the United Arab Emirates to mend ties between Riyadh and Damascus.
The UAE is now one of several countries leading humanitarian efforts in Syria. On February 12, its foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan paid a visit to Damascus and met with President Bashar al-Assad.
During a previous visit in January, Abdullah bin Zayed discussed the Saudi-Syrian rapprochement process with Assad, according to Al-Watan. After the visit, he sent a message to his Saudi counterpart, Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
The bad humanitarian situation in Syria that resulted from the devastating earthquake could encourage Saudi Arabia to speed up its plans to restore relations with Damascus. Tunisia has already announced its intention to step up its diplomatic representation in the country in response to the disaster.
