Egypt Improves Defensive Measures In Suez Canal After Repeated ISIS Attacks - Report

Egyptian Army soldiers in Sinai peninsula, By the Egyptian Ministry of Defense.

The Egyptian military and security forces have implemented new defensive measures to secure the eastern bank of the strategic Suez Canal from ISIS cells in the neighboring Sinai Peninsula, the New Arab reported on December 7.

According to London-based news outlet, additional armored vehicles were deployed along the eastern bank of the canal, where new checkpoints were also set up. Furthermore, several units of the elite Airborne Corps and the El-Sa’ka Forces were sent to the area.

The Egyptian military and security forces are currently conducting daily night patrols along the eastern bank of the Suez Canal.

“Army forces ordered the closure of the tunnels under the Suez Canal from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m., out of fear that ISIS could detonate a car bomb in one of the tunnels, which might damage it, or halt traffic there temporarily,” the News Arab said in its report, citing sources with knowledge on the matter.

In addition, Egyptian reconnaissance planes are counducting sorties over the Suez Canal and the city of al-Qantara on its eastern bank on a daily basis.

ISIS cells in Sinai attacked the eastern bank of the canal on several occasions this year. On May 7, the terrorists attacked a water pumping station in el-Qantara. At least 11 service members were killed in the attack. Later on November 19, the terrorists stormed the city of el-Qantara on the eastern bank of the canal. The quick and professional intervention of the Egyptian Air Force pushed the terrorists back. However, two officers and five soldiers were killed.

According to the New Arab, the Egyptian military and security forces are expecting more attacks on the Suez Canal by ISIS in the near future.

The new defensive measures will limit the movements of ISIS cells near the Suez Canal. The terrorists could attack again. However, they will not likely manage to disturb operations in the canal.
