According to photos and videos available online, the Egyptian Navy used land-based Avenger air defense systems during the joint French-Egyptian naval exercises “Cleopatra 2017” that took place in July 2017.
The US-made AN/TWQ-1 Avenger sytems were positioned on the flight deck of the Mistral-class Landing Helicopter Dock and were acting as point short-range air defence systems.
The deployment of land-based air defense systems on the flight deck limits the military capabilities of the helicopter carrier. Furthermore, it directly limits the usage of attack helicopters from the flight deck.
Meanwhile, reports appear that Russian and Egypt negotiate over Kamov Ka-52K attack helicopters supplies for Mistral-class LHDs operated by the Egyptian Navy.
The Russian state-run news agency TASS reported (SOURCE):
Russia and Egypt will hold negotiations at the MAKS-2017 international airshow on the deliveries of Russian-made Kamov Ka-52K helicopters for Mistral-class amphibious assault ships, Director of Russia’s Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation Dmitry Shugayev said on Tuesday.
‘We presume that a large number of events will be held. We are planning negotiations with our partners from Egypt and are planning to discuss the issues of the deliveries of helicopters for Mistral ships,” he said at the MAKS-2017 airshow.
It was reported earlier that Russia had won a tender for the delivery of deck-based Ka-52K helicopters for Egypt’s Mistral-class ships.
The Ka-52K is based on a range of shipborne rotocraft accepted by the Russian Navy for service. This range includes Ka-25, Ka-27, Ka-29 and Ka-31 helicopters.

Truck based missile system on a ship? What if the batteries fail or they run out of gas?
Seems weird to me, tbh.
poor man cooks with water :)
It would be quite fascinating to see a parked vehicle run out of gas indeed…
That……, is such an Arab way to fix a problem. Just slap a Humvee with a stinger missile system on it.

I am sure this is a temporary fix while the ships are made sea worthy. I expect to see something similar to the pantsir installed on these boats very soon
At least…. dismount the system from the bloody vehicle first?
Not practical, much easier to just crane the whole thing on/off the ship.
I agree with you. They probably did not realize that they can remove the actual system and the computer and mount it in a more professional manor.
Whats even more interesting is russian helicopters flying off of a french built ship lol
The KA-52 was made for the Mistral and Egypt’s Mistrals were designed to accommodate the KA-52.
That’s not true dumbass…
Why don’t you enlighten us, smartass…
First of all, you can fly any helicopter onto any ship given the right dimensions… No one ship is purely designed for one helicopter/aircraft… even aircraft carriers… and if they need to change something, they just change it….
And no where does it say that mistral was specifically designed for this helicopter… that would be stupid.. If anything they would design it for a french helicopter first…
The Egyptian Mistrals were built to Russia specifications: https://sputniknews.com/military/201705051053306310-ka-52-k-mistral-egypt-russia/
“adapted for Ka-52K”
ADAPTED! ADAPTED! You dumbass! That means CHANGED for the helicopter… JUST LIKE I SAID BEFORE… NOT BUILT FOR IT.
Also, the KA-52 was first built in 1992 Mistral class was built in 2005…
So they waited 13 years to build the ship???? LOL Dumbass…
Just to be really funny, Russia should sell them an old style S-200 system haha. Those things are big. I’d love to see them Shemetic-Arabs park that thing on the ship with the massive missile pointed upward the whole time hahaha
