On February 21, Egyptian Army spokesman Colonel Tamer Rifai announced in an official statement that warplanes of the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) had destroyed 8 positions of ISIS cells in the Sinai Peninsula. The Egyptian Army’s artillery also shelled 179 ISIS targets, according to Col. Rifai.
Col. Rifai added that the army had killed 4 fighters of ISIS and arrested 112 others during its military and security operations in the Sinai Peninsula. Moreover, the army destroyed 350 hideouts, 13 vehicles and 27 motorcycles in Sinai.
The army also uncovered and destroyed a network of trenches, a large underground fuel depot and a media center of ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula, according to Col. Rifai. Meanwhile, army demining squads removed 41 IEDs, which had been planted by ISIS cells in different parts of Sinai.
The Egyptian Army had launched a large-scale military operation against ISIS cells and drug traffickers in theSinai Peninsula on February 9. Since then, ISIS cells conducted a very limited number of hit and run attacks there, which reflect the success of the army’s operation.
