On February 9, Egyptian Army spokesman Colonel Tamer Rifai announced in an official statement that the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) had destroyed several positions, hideouts and ammo depots of ISIS cells in the center and northern part of the Saini Peninsula.
Col. Rifai also revealed that the Egyptian Navy had tightened its defensive efforts in the Egyptian waters, while the Egyptian Border Guards had stepped up their security measures on the Egyptian border.
Egyptian sources confirmed that the Rafah border crossing between Sinai Peninsula and the Palestinian Gaza Strip had been closed, along with many important routes and highways in the peninsula.
Meanwhile, security forces conducted a series of operations in the provinces of Assuit, Qalyobia, Dakahlyia, Fayoum, Sharkiya, Bahiyra and in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, according to local sources. Security forces killed three members of the radical Hasem Movement in Cairo and arrested fourteen others. Firearms and IEDs were also confiscated.
Earlier, the Egyptian Army announced the start of a large military operation against “terrorist and criminal elements and organizations” in the Sinai peninsula and other parts of the country. The ongoing Egyptian Army military operation will not likely end anytime soon. However, it will for sure reduce the threat of ISIS and other terrorist groups inside Egypt.
