The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, announced on June 15 that it had ambushed a unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the group said that its fighters first targeted an armored D9 bulldozer of the IDF in the Saudi neighborhood of the Tal Al-Sultan area to west of Rafah with a locally-made Al-Yassin 105 rocket-propelled grenade, destroying it and leaving its crew dead and wounded.
Later, when the IDF dispatched a rescue force to the neighborhood, the fighters targeted a Namer armored personnel carrier (APC) also with an Al-Yassin 105, according to the group, which alleged that the crew of the vehicle were all killed or wounded.
The group noted that the ambush came on the Islamic Day of Arafah, which is the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage and is followed by the holiday of Eid al-Adha.
Hebrew media confirmed that an IDF unit was ambushed near Rafah leading to the complete destruction of an APC. The attack reportedly resulted in eight Israeli casualties, with some news sources alleging that all of them were killed.
The IDF has not yet commented on the ambush. Typically, the Israeli military acknowledges its human losses within 24 hours.
Separately, the al-Qauds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, released video footage showing an Israeli soldier being hit by one of its snipers in the occupied Netzarim Corridor in central Gaza, which splits the Strip in half.
It is still unclear when exactly the sniping attack took place, or if the soldier seen being hit in the al-Qauds Brigades’ footage had been killed.
At least 300 Israeli troops have been killed since the beginning of ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border. More than 1,908 others have been reportedly wounded during the same period.
Meanwhile on the Palestinian side, the death toll reached 37,296 with more than 85,197 others wounded, according to the latest statement by the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. Women and children make up most of the casualties.
“Israeli attacks killed 30 people and injured 95 others in the last 24 hours,” the ministry said in the statement which was released on June 15. “Many people are still trapped under rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them.”
The latest ambush in Rafah shows that the IDF has failed to achieve any of the objectives it launched the war on Gaza for, despite destroying much of the Strip. Still, Israel will not back down from the war, especially considering that it continues to receive unwavering support from the United States and several other Western allies.
