On April 11, parts of the electrical grid at Iran’s main nuclear facilities at Natanz have been compromised after an “incident”, according to the reports by Al Jazeera.
“The reasons behind the incident are being investigated and additional information will be provided later,” spokesman of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi told the Fars News Agency.
There were no casualties as a result of the incident. No environmental pollution have been reported. Details of the incident were not disclosed.
According to the official statements, on April 1, Iran has started testing the improved IR-9 uranium enrichment centrifuges at the underground plant in Natanz. It should be put into operation together with IR-1, IR-2m and IR-4 centrifuges. Under the terms of the nuclear deal, Iran can only use IR-1 ones.
Last July, Natanz was hit by a large explosion. According to the Iranian side, the saboteurs sought to disrupt the uranium enrichment process at the Natanz facility, but they were not successful in this respect. The act of sabotage reportedly caused no casualties and failed to stop the enrichment work at the facility.
But the government, citing security concerns, has refrained from disclosing additional information, only saying it has identified the saboteurs.
The incident took place amid the first week of indirect talks to restore Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal in Vienna. This week two working groups were formed. One was aimed at listing the US sanctions from 2018 that would need to be lifted while the other would gauge what measures Iran needs to take to return to full compliance with the accord.
However, according to the reports the sides did not avoid the clash, with Washington predicting an impasse if Tehran sticks to a demand that all sanctions since 2017 be removed. At the same time. the United States claimed it may be possible to lift “sanctions that are inconsistent with the JCPOA”. Washington refused to precise the exact sanctions. At the moment, Tehran should not look for fulfillment of its demands.
