Israel has acknowledged that its state-of-the-art, multi-tiered air defense network had failed to intercept a Soviet air-defense missile launched by Syria.
The missile, a 5V21-type of an S-200 air-defense system, was launched by the Syrian Arab Air Defense Forces at Israeli warplanes preparing to launch airstrikes on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, early on April 22. The missile missed its target but went on to land some 250 km deep in Israel, 40 km away from the Dimona nuclear reactor.
During a press conference in Tel Aviv, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz acknowledged that the military had failed to intercept the stray Syrian missile.
“The IDF worked to prevent a potential strike on critical assets in the State of Israel. A SA-5-model of surface-to-air missile was fired, passed through the area,” Gantz said. “There was an attempt to intercept it, which did not succeed. We are still investigating the event.”
Gantz did not explain how Israel’s complex and expensive air-defense network, which consists of dozens of Iron Dome, David Sling, Patriot and Arrow batteries, had failed to intercept a missile developed in the Soviet Union all the way back in the 60s.
Israel responded to the incident by targeting the Syrian S-200 battery which launched the missile. Several other targets were also struck.

The Syrian Arab News Agency reported that four Syrian service members were injured as a result of Israel’s retaliatory strikes. However, pro-government sources revealed that an officer, 1st Lt. Bassel Khadur, was killed in the strikes.
The exact circumstances of what happened early on April 22 between Israel and Syria are yet to be revealed. However, there is no doubt that the incident exposed some serious problems in the Israeli air-defense network, which costed the country as well as the US billions of dollars.

A coordinated and large scale strike of 100 missiles or more, say 1,000 Hezbollah missiles in a single afternoon, would represent a serious threat to Israeli security. If Syria wasn’t fighting off a multi-front civil conflict she would have the freedom of movement enough to respond to Israeli strikes with strikes of her own, which in time would deter Israeli strikes before they are launched. Add in Russia hopefully and finally granting Syria’s government control and operation of the S-300 systems and things are far less rosy for Israel than your diatribe bravado suggests.

I have the same thought. Israel may have targeted an AD system as a cover, to ensure their sheeple do not know the truth. As is widely known, an AD missile would not have the explosive power that has been reported. Many in Israel have stated that it was the loudest explosion they have ever heard. It appears that people in the northern end of the country felt buildings shake as well. Being that Israel has used surface to surface missiles in Gaza and this still dwarfs them, speaks volumes. Whether the Dimona plant was targeted or not, this event should open some eyes as to Israel’s invulnerability. It should also be noted that there is a US base very near Dimona. Hitting it would drastically affect US/Iranian talks, not to mention possible US ‘retaliation’. Lots of issues here. Israeli’s should stop and think what the effect would have been had it been a missile swarm from Iran. They wouldn’t be around today to contemplate that.

I doubt the failure was due to prioritization of the expected impact area. There wasn’t any expected area in the first place. Its not a ballistic missile, a stray land-air missile can change course due to the wind as well. I think location is irrelevant, rather failed due to no detection.
What we know is that every time an Israeli AD system fires a missile, there will be multiple cell phone videos of the launch or flight from people on the ground. Everyone gets excited about a launch and the sirens usually start in the area ahead of time. This happens regardless whether people can see the incoming missile at all. They damn sure see the AD missiles launching. A missile headed to central Israel would have multiple air defence missiles from several sites launched at it. You don’t just fire a single interceptor and hope it works, nor do you let a missed missile continue to fly half-way across your country without further attempts to down it. Of course Israel is going to spin this as something it’s not. What a failure.

As for the missile, not sure about what this shows. I find it hard to believe that an exploding S200 would shake and rattle buildings over 50 miles away as reported. I also loved the way they informed their people only after the missile exploded, not in real time as is usual. At the very least, this is quite the wake-up call for Israelis who are convinced that they are safe. What goes around…
