Erdogan Instructs Turkish Foreign Minister To Meet With Syria’s Assad

File image.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on July 12 that he instructed Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad to start to restore relations with Damascus.

“I have already called on Assad for a visit to Turkey or a meeting in a third country and I have instructed my foreign minister on this matter,” Erdoğan told reporters in Washington after the NATO leaders’ summit.

“We want to start a new process by overcoming this resentment,” the Turkish president added, doubling down on his recent normalization rhetoric.

In May, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani revealed that his government was working on reconciliation between Turkey and Syria.

Later in June the rapprochement process between Ankara and Damascus gained more momentum after Assad told Russia’s Syria envoy, Alexander Lavrentyev, that “Syria welcomes” all reconciliation initiatives with Turkey.

Following the statement, Erdogan said that he was ready to talk to the Syrian president. The remarks and a later attack on Syrian refugees in Turkey led to mass protests in Turkish-controlled parts in northern Syria.

Since Syria’s civil war erupted in 2011, Ankara, along with its western partners, supported the Syrian rebels, cutting ties with Assad.

Direct talks between high-level Turkish and Syrian officials launched by Russia in 2022 faltered last year as Damascus pressed for Turkish forces to withdraw from the country.

Now, both sides found themselves in a position where they need to restore relations in order to address serious problems, like the de-facto state United States-backed Kurdish forces are trying to establish in northern and eastern Syria, and the future of Syrian refugees in Turkey.

russia is so weak. if putin didn’t stopped his forces everytime they were winning and destroyed western proxies and let saa attack us military bases, the conflict would be over 15 years ago. look, syria is under constatn attacks from israel, they don’t control omar fields, country can’t be rebuild and is facing all sanctions you can imagine. maybe it would be better for assad to lose that war and live in exile then be hostage of putin and his extremally weak foreign policy

syria is nice example of pyrrhic victory that putin and his “infinite ceasefires” policy achieved, the same will happen to donbas and crimea, which will be under constant attacks because putin is crazy and obsessed with “deals”. lavrov is second idiot of that kind.

uuu

but who knows, maybe after 1000 putin-lavrov deals failed, including infamous “minsk agreements”, maybe deal no 1001 will work ? i’m sure putin is eager to give it a chance . erdogan is perfect candidate for such a deal, he betrayed russia and syria only 100 times.

AM Hants

president putin is fully aware of erdogan. remember, he rescued him and his family from an assassination attempt, by nato members. turkey, which has the 2nd largest army in nato, but, possibly moving over to the brics partnership. constantinople to crimea, so comes to mind, but not in the manner nato was expecting.

AM Hants

do you remember the interview with president assad, after russia were invited to help syria? where he stated, that there would be no syria, if not for russia?

i wonder how you would handle things, if you were in the same position as president putin?

kotromanic

i would have told assad that i will back him but i will not be able to prevent the usa to still do much damage to the country so it would be smarter to take the quatari /us pipelineoffer then the iranian/ russian one.

Mowaten

that’s basically what actually happened. russia supported syria within the limit that russia would not get into a direct confrontation with turkey, us, or israel, which is why they have avoided acting directly against those. even syria, given the situation and balance of power, has abstained from confronting (at least directly) the turks in the north, the americans in the east & south, and the israelis.

Piipii

the usa and the west stopped destroying syria when they realized that extremists would rise to power. there was a long documentary about this and interviews with the leading figures.

Mowaten

patience is the name of the game here, syria has managed to first survive and overcome the coup attempt, and is slowly but surely consolidating its position, domestically and internationally. the reintegration in the arab league, the resumption of diplomatic relations and commercial flights with arab states, and now the rapprochement with turkey all indicate that the tide has turned in favor of syria and it is only a matter of time

Mowaten

the pipeline was never the core factor. it sure was a way to get qataris onboard, and to cut off russia from the european gas market, but it was not by itself enough.

what they really wanted was to cut off the land bridge between iran and lebanon (to starve hezbollah of weapons) and to get russian navy out of syria and deprive them of their only port in the mediterranean. this was unacceptable for syria, russia, iran, and hezbollah, which is why they all fought relentlessly to counter it

Topo

you are completely right, putin is held by the lubavitch, so he tries to make himself seen by israel which he defends, just look at how he installed military posts with the occupied golan in order to protect israel from incursion of iraqi resistance forces

it’s not weak jewtin foreign policy. jewtin is a jew& a chabad lubavitch puppet. the jewish elite wants world-communism. ww1 was to topple christian russia, ww2 was to spread communism to europe &asia, & ww3 will be to make it rule over whole earth. that’s why the jews want europe & usa to be destroyed& replaced by their jewish communist slavestates ru & china rule.islam is enemy of it, same as nationalism. because judaism&communism is satanic internationalism.

it seems like putin is able to see past the virtually reality maintained by the matrix.

the sheer arrogance and disrespect towards pres. assad by erdogan is shocking. erdgn expects ‘usa-nato-isr’ on one side and ‘rus-brics’ on the other to lick his boots and accept trk’s illegal occupation of nw syria.

erdgn might be tying himself in knots playing one against the other, but while stupidity and greed remain the main drivers of both sides he will (unfortunately) succeed.

assad’s father would never have let syria become hostage to so many sheisters.

erdogan place the game that tito once played succesfully. the turks should just be sure to not make too many mistakes or it might end up like yugoslavia after tito as well.

Teresa999

you are mistaken. it is turkish land. the land was stolen from turkey by evil uk-zionist treaty of lausanne. a treaty equal to the versaille treaty which the jews forced on german realm. lausanne forced ottoman empire aka turkey to give up land for 100 years and banned turkey from digging and using lots of its own minerals and earth riches. 2023: end of the treaty of lausanne http://alturl.com/9utdp

and the us socialist again forgot its public meeting and that he should not read the cia anticipation of future and said putin is president of ukraine. which might happen for a moment after ukraine is liberated completely before new real president of ukraine is elected and seal eternal union with russia, belarus and rest of free or liberated slavian nations.

never thought i would have believed biden was psychic, but, there again, 30% of ukraine has already returned to russia, and so there is truth in his words. not sure when he made trump his vice though.

Moshe Dayan

syria asked for russian help against the extremist forces funded by the western pigs. putin has saved that country from certain failure and prevented the beheaders from continuing to dismantle that country. go sell your nato lies somewhere else. i suggest learning to repent of lying before the end arrives.

all the oil trucks from isis went to turkey for several years and turkey occupies a part of syria, but life must go on. i remember when the forces of assad only held the damascus area and the highway to aleppo, so a lot of progress is made thanks to the martyrs.

as long as turkey is in nato, and nato is funding the proxies in syria, i wouldn’t trust erdogon one bit, the us has 200 tactical nukes pointed at turkey, from inside turkey on a us base, just to be clear, turkey is a loose hostage in this case. leave nato, kick out us nukes, stop supporting us proxy militants… after that, then maybe talks…
