On March 7, the Center for a New American Security hosted a “panel discussion on why the U.S. military needs to change how it fights to meet the challenge of great-power competition as described in the 2018 National Defense Strategy“. A notable part of the discussion was dedicated to claims tha the US should increase its military spending in order to contain Russian and Chinese threats.
According to the provided version of the events, in a simulated ‘World War 3’ scenario, the US may loses decisively to Russia and China if it engages them in reginos near their borders: like the Baltics for Russia or Taiwan for China.
“We lose a lot of people. We lose a lot of equipment. We usually fail to achieve our objective of preventing aggression by the adversary,” RAND analyst David Ochmanek told a security conference. “In our games, when we fight Russia and China, blue gets its ass handed to it.”
The main voiced concern is that land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace would all be up for contention in such a conflict. Previously, the US military ha an advantage in all of these fields.
According to the provided data, Russian hypersonic weapons and Chinese cyber capabilities trigger a special concern among US analysts.
If American communications satellites and wireless networks were to be taken out, “the brain and the nervous system that connects all of these pieces is suppressed, if not shattered,” Ochmanek noted. “On our side, whenever we have an exercise, when the red force really destroys our command and control, we stop the exercise and say, ‘Let’s restart.’”
Robert Work, a former deputy secretary of defense, also adressed some problems with the F-35.
“In every case I know of, the F-35 rules the sky when it’s in the sky,” he said. “But it gets killed on the ground in large numbers.”
The analysts further claimed claimed that US forces stationed in Europe are too vulnerable to missiles, airstrikes and drone attacks.
How to solve this problem? Predictably, RAND researchers called for spending hikes.
“$24 billion a year for the next five years would be a good expenditure,” Work suggested.

Is it so hard to admit that when you throw a limitless amount at money at a problem it might actually work? I hate the damn thing like everyone else, but Lockheed Martin was able to extract limitless cash from the US government and partners, so I reckon the damn thing might actually work. Is it the best value for money? Of course not, but will it work? I’m willing to look past my bias and admit that it might.

Says who? It flies, it get used. Obviously it does work so they worked out some of its issues. The only thing we don’t know is how much they managed to fix and how much it will live up to the advertising. But I reckon its data linking capabilities alone make it not something to be easily dismissed out of hand. One of the most important lessons of warfare is that capabilities of equipment do not matter as much as how well you use it, and in what way. Older MiG-17’s and MiG-19’s were capable of taking down the most advanced US aircraft during the Vietnam war because the Americans had the wrong air to air fighting doctrine and had forgotten how to dogfight. I reckon with the right doctrine and training the F-35 can be used successfully in a war.
And I say this as someone who still loathes the damn thing with a fiery passion.

the flaws in the planes designs are not something is fixable, unless of course they re make it and become a plane that can actually fly. The holywood solutions they attempt to apply to the plane does not work in real life. You have a bias, I dont. I have knowledge in the technology the americans must overcome with, in order to make it work and do what they claim it can do.
Nothing they can do can revive a dead donkey and is what that plane with so many countries building it in lego parts can be over come. But hey believe what you like.
I don’t believe what I like, because if I did that thing wouldn’t be flying at all. I’m just willing to admit that A: I have a bias in the first place, and B: that it might work after all, which I do not find that strange considering how much money has been thrown at this problem. If bronze age humans can build massive pyramids and stone age humans can build Machu Pichu there is no limit to what space age humans can do, provided they are both determined and have unlimited funds at their disposal.
That still doesn’t mean the plane will work as fully advertised, but enough to become a working aircraft. It’s still a flying brick, but so was the F-4 Phantom and it did quite well in its time. And it does have a nifty data linking set that I reckon does help it to become a force multiplyer of sorts. Which I reckon is why both Russia and China focus so much on interrupting US networks in the first place. Remove those networks and all you’re left with is a flying brick with limited stealth and only marginally better ground attack capabilities then the latest model of the F-16. Hardly worth the extra money if you ask me, so you can still chalk me up as a die hard F-35 hater.
