The so-called Greater Idlib region in northwest Syria is reportedly witnessing increasing tension between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Horas al-Din.
According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the tension erupted two days ago, when HTS’ security forces arrested a number of Horas al-Din militants near the town of Batabo in northern Idlib.
Horas al-Din responded to the arrest of its militants by abducting a field commander of HTS in the town of Muhambal in southwest Idlib. This led to a strict reaction by HTS, which stormed Horas al-Din headquarters in the town.
“A force of HTS raided in the afternoon of today, Friday [December 13], a headquarters of Horas al-Din in Muhambal, there were no clashes between the two sides,” the SOHR’s report reads.
Last September, the two terrorist groups were heading to a military confrontation due to a similar incident. However, they resolved the crisis thanks to a partnership agreement they reached earlier this year.
Despite sharing the same ideology and their affiliation with al-Qaeda, HTS and Horas al-Din often act as competitors in Greater Idlib. This has lead to many conflicts between the two groups, since the establishment of Horas al-Din by HTS defectors in 2018.
