The situation in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa continues to escalate despite ongoing talks between the authorities and former rebels.
Earlier on July 29, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a military operation against the remaining former rebels in the southern part of Daraa city, known as a Daraa al-Balad. The operation provoked former rebels in other parts of the governorate, who responded with a series of attacks on posts and checkpoints of the army.
In the afternoon, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported that two civilians, including a child, were killed when former rebels targeted the northern part of Daraa city with heavy machine guns and mortars. The city’s main hospital was damaged as a result of the shelling.
The SAA is yet to storm Daraa al-Balad. The army slowed down its shelling on the area in the afternoon. Nevertheless, former rebels stepped up their attacks in the eastern and western countryside of the governorate.
According to the Horan Free League, the gunmen captured more positions from the army, including Zaizoun camp, al-Kunsurwah checkpoint and al-Saika camp, in the western countryside of Daraa.
The gunmen also captured 30 service members of the SAA. Earlier today, 70 service members were allegedly captured.
Despite the current escalation, talks between Syrian authorities and local leaders in Daraa al-Balad are still ongoing. If the two side failed to reach a new agreement, the SAA will likely go on with its operation.
