On September 17, four civilians were killed when the Turkish military shelled the village of al-Dibs in northeastern Syria.

The village is located to the west of the town of Ain Issa, in a part of the northern countryside of Raqqa that’s held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Hawar News Agency, which is affiliated with the SDF, identified the four victims as Malik al-Muharib al-Hamid, 25, Idan Hamad al-Amiri, 40, Hamad al-Khunais al-Jarbou, 20, and Khmus al-Busaili, 17.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the four victims were digging tunnels for the SDF when they were targeted by the Turkish military.

This incident could provoke a serious escalation between Turkish forces and the SDF in the northern countryside of Raqqa. Recently, the SDF stepped up its attacks on Turkish forces in the northern Aleppo countryside in response to similar deadly attacks.

Earlier this year, the Turkish military and its troops carried out a series of attacks on Ain Issa and its surroundings. The town hosts one of the main headquarters of the SDF’s civil administration in northeastern Syria. Russian and Syrian government forces are also situated around the town.
