Late on May 28, a series of explosions rocked the US-led coalition’s base in al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern countryside of Syria’s Deir Ezzor.
The Sabereen News channel on Telegram, which is known to be close to Iranian-backed factions in Iraq, claimed the that base, known as the Green Village, was hit by a salvo of 12 Grad 122 mm rockets. However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the explosions were the result of a joint live-fire exercise between the coalition and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The US-led coalition has not commented on the matter, yet. Usually, the coalition acknowledges any attack on its bases in Syria.
If confirmed, this won’t be the first attack to target the US-led coalition’s Green Village base this year. The last confirmed attack on the base was on April 7. The attack left four American service members wounded. The coalition described the attack as an “act of sabotage”.
Earlier this year, a series of attacks with rockets and drones targeted several bases of the US-led coalition in northeastern Syria. Iranian-backed Syrian and Iraqi forces were unofficially blamed for most of these attacks.
The US-led coalition deployed large reinforcements in al-Omar and several other oil and gas fields in northeastern Syria over the past few months. Washington appears to be determined to keep its forces in the region for the long term under the pretext of countering ISIS.
