On January 26, a series of large explosions rocked the Israeli-occupied part of the Golan Heights in Syria’s southern region.

The explosions, which were heard all over the Syrian governorate of al-Quneitra, were reportedly the result of ongoing work by engineer units of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) to remove an old minefield that lays to the west of the abandoned town of Shayta.

Syrian sources said that the IDF is removing the minefield to expand a new road in the buffer zone along the separation line with Syria.

In November, Israel began paving the road along the separation line in a blatant violation of the 1974 separation of forces agreement with Syria which strictly prevents the IDF from operating within the 235 square kilometer buffer zone in al-Quneitra.

The removal of the minefield will supposedly allow the IDF to further extend the new road, which was codenamed “Sufa 53”.

Last year, the IDF made several intrusions into al-Quneitra buffer zone, either to drive Syrian troops and alleged Hezbollah members away or to destroy their observation posts and fortifications there. The new road is meant to expand IDF influence over the zone so that its soldiers could patrol the front with more ease.

The Syrian government has not yet commented on this violation of the separation of forces agreement, neither has the United Nation who maintain forces along the front.
