On August 13, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security issued a new National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin regarding the current heightened threat environment across the U.S. The document assessed the main threats to the U.S. national security within the terrorist sphere.
The top danger are “racially- or ethnically-motivated violent extremists (RMVEs) and anti-government/anti-authority violent extremists”, who seek to exploit the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-COVID restrictions as a rationale to conduct their attacks.
Meanwhile, foreign terrorist organizations were mentioned “additionally”.
“Additionally, leading up to the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula recently released its first English-language copy of Inspire magazine in over four years, which demonstrates that foreign terrorist organizations continue efforts to inspire U.S.-based individuals susceptible to violent extremist influences.”
Describing the main tactics of the internal U.S. threat posed by all sorts of extermists, the Secretary of Homeland Security did not forget to mention the role of the maid U.S. adversaries: Russia, China and Iran.
“Nation-state adversaries have increased efforts to sow discord. For example, Russian, Chinese and Iranian government-linked media outlets have repeatedly amplified conspiracy theories concerning the origins of COVID-19 and effectiveness of vaccines; in some cases, amplifying calls for violence targeting persons of Asian descent” – the report reads.
The new accusations come amid the ongoing campaign aimed at blaming Russia, China and Iran of fueling conspiracy theories and all sorts of disinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For example, Facebook has recently claimed that it had banned hundreds of social media accounts allegedly linked to a Russian vaccine misinformation network.

It took a long time to unveil the Kremlin’s hand creating this memes. Yet in February 2020, the Guardian claimed that Moscow was promoting conspiracy theories, blaming the United States for creation of the virus, in particular, saying that the virus was a biological weapon created by the CIA.
Unfortunately, the claims about the chimpanzees are more interesting for the Americans than the official comments from Russia. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied accusations of politicization of the pandemic and disinformation.
“We have repeatedly claimed that we are categorically against the politicization of everything related to the vaccine. We strongly disagree with it. On the contrary, the process of promoting our Russian vaccines often faces a politicized approach, ” said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president.
