Late on October 8, a female Israeli soldier was killed and a security guard was seriously wounded when a Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint there were manning near the Shuafat refugee camp in East Joursalem.
The Palestinian gunman arrived in a vehicle then fired at the checkpoint before fleeing, while under fire, into the nearby refugee camp.
Footage from a security camera shows the gunman getting out of a white vehicle, as it goes through the checkpoint, and slowly walking over to a group of soldiers and guards who are standing nearby unaware of his presence. He then pulls out a handgun and fires several shots into the group, hitting two of them as the others dive for cover.
The Israeli Defense Forces announced the death of the soldier, who was identified as 18-year-old Noa Lazar, after the attack. Lazar, who served as a corporal, was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.
The next morning, the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem said that the wounded security guard had been operated on overnight by neurosurgeons and remained in serious condition on a ventilator.
Israel’s Prime Minister Yair Lapid issued a statement mourning the soldier’s death and vowing to apprehend the attacker as soon as possible.
“We will not be quiet and know no rest until we bring justice to the depraved terrorist,” Lapid said.
Following the attack, Israeli security forces raided the Shuafat refugee camp in search for the shooter and two other suspects. Special forces units and a helicopter took part in the manhunt. None of the suspects have been apprehended, yet.
The deadly shooting attack in East Jerusalem came after two days of clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Four Palestinian teenage boys were killed by Israeli fire. Many other people were wounded.
