Fighting Escalates In Yemen

Support SouthFront

Fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces intensified over the past week, centered on two fronts — Houthi missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia, and battles for key positions around Taiz and the Bab al-Mandeb approaches.

On September 25, Yemen’s internationally recognized government ordered a nationwide military mobilization as the Houthis continued attacks around Hijat al Abd and al Ashbut, threatening the route linking Taiz with Aden in southwestern Yemen. The mobilization was the first nationwide order by the government during the current escalation, although new forces would require training before reaching the front lines. Around the same time, France announced plans to deploy troops, radar and defensive systems to protect the Saudi Red Sea port of Yanbu from possible Houthi attacks.

The following day, Saudi Arabia reported intercepting two drones headed toward Riyadh and two ballistic missiles launched toward Khamis Mushait. At the same time, heavy fighting continued around Jabal Naman and Jabal Kahbub in Lahij province, where control of high ground overlooking the Red Sea has become strategically important.

On September 27, clashes continued around Taiz, while government-aligned forces conducted drone strikes against Houthi positions and vehicles around Kahbub. A strike also hit the Mawiya junction in Taiz, according to the Houthi-run health ministry, which reported seven people killed and 40 wounded.

By September 28, government forces were increasingly targeting Houthi logistics around Taiz, including weapons depots and military vehicles near al-Rubaie, along the road toward Mokha. Fighting also continued around Kahbub as Southern Giants forces reported repelling Houthi attacks. Clashes were also reported around Jabal Habashi, south of the Mokha-Taiz road, where the Houthis could threaten the supply route into Taiz.

On September 29, military preparations expanded on both sides. The Yemeni government-aligned Southern Arabian Tribes announced plans for eight new battalions in Aden, while reports emerged of a Houthi mobilization campaign.

The next day, Saudi strikes reportedly focused further on Houthi missile infrastructure. Reports indicated attacks on suspected missile-launch positions and military facilities in Amran province, alongside other strikes in northern and western Yemen. The strikes were assessed as an effort to reduce the Houthis’ ability to attack Saudi oil infrastructure and military bases, while Saudi and Yemeni government forces continued targeting Houthi logistics and frontline positions.

As of October 1, there was no independently confirmed major territorial breakthrough. The conflict remained concentrated around Taiz, routes connecting it to southern Yemen, and the strategic high ground near the Bab al-Mandeb.

All in all, fighting intensified in Yemen, with Saudi Arabia relying increasingly on air power and the Houthis combining battlefield pressure with missile and drone attacks. The Houthis retained territory captured earlier in September, keeping pressure on Taiz.
