Finland's Prime Minister Blames Russia For GPS Failures During NATO War Games

Following wild speculations about a secret Russian military base at a private island in western Finland, the country’s Prime Minster Juha Sipila has come with a statement blaiming Moscow for GPS failures during the recent NATO war games.

On November 11, Sipila stated that Finland’s GPS signal had been intentionally disrupted during NATO’s exercise Trident Juncture over the past few weeks.

“It is possible that Russia has been the disrupting party in this. Russia is known to possess such capabilities,” Sipila told public broadcaster Yle.

On November 6, Finland’s air navigation services issued a warning for air traffic due to a large-scale GPS interruption in the northern part of the country. Norway released a similar warning about loss of GPS signals for pilots in its own airspace in late October when the Trident Juncture started. Since then, some mainstream media outlets have been in fire speculating about the “Russian involvement” into these GPS failures.

The Trident Juncture 2018 took place from October 25 to November 23 2018 involving 50,000 servicemembers, 10,000 vehicles, 250 aircraft and 65 vessels from 31 states. The war games mainly took place in central and eastern parts of Norway, and air and sea areas in Norway, Sweden and Finland – near Russia’s border. This was the largest NATO exercise sicne the 1980s.

This is what happens when you forward deploy your aggressive maneuvers next to the target country’s borders. You might find yourself impacted by the target country’s electronic warfare exercises.

You can call me Al

Or you maybe so crap, you bump into a tanker.

Jens Holm

You might freqent a map Yourself not knowing where Norway as wll as Finland is and Finland is no nato member even being afiliated some.

But of course it doesnt bother You the Norweigian coast is as a minimum 600 km away. It just come from You as having bad stomach.

Aen RaBeon

Again highly likely…

micromgm1-1

It seems the US is actively looking for “enemy” subs in the Northern Seas:

NBC reports today that “U.S. is engaged in the “Fourth Battle of the Atlantic” against Russia”:

https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/exclusive-on-board-an-american-missile-destroyer-as-it-pursues-russian-submarines-1367787075585?v=railb&

John Whitehot

the link is removed. it was probably fake news.

Jens Holm

Of course they do. It would be strange, if they did not.

They might even refind Kursk for the Russians :) Its an international area and Norway and Russia do share coast and land borders. Russians dont have ownership or patents and that very well descriebed.

For the moment they negosiate about where they can drill and find oil up there in the socalled Barents havet. If they find some,it can become a sea of importance.

Promitheas Apollonious

they are blaming the russians, rather than their incompetence and poor technology they have, the morons.

seawolf

Oh boy, aren’t they tired on blaming Russia all the time and for everything? When your are getting near to a bear then blame yourself if you are beaten.

Selbstdenker

I wonder when they start blaming the Russians for the “sinking” of the Norwegian frigate…

Pertsa

Of course he does, it is interesting however that Finland by its laws should be neutral and no vote has been taken to get closer to Nato. In the past, Finland in the 60’s and 70’s denied common wargames with Soviet Union as too radical. In the times of “Finlandizierung” that was. A steady 60-70 % of the Finnish voters does not want Nato membership for Finland.

Jens Holm

You mis use statistics. Fx https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/poll_one-third_would_back_finlands_nato_membership_on_presidents_say-so/10349952

30% say no and You´add the normal big group telling “I dont know or I dont care” and then get Your 60-70 %.

You might be family to Assads in calculating. Even 12 million of 19 in Syria deny to fight, he says they support him and the Baathists.

Pertsa

I live in Finland, so I know that sadly Yle is for 5 years now gov’t nato propaganda. It is like the prime minister tells us economy is better than never before but out of 5 million people one million is factly below poverty line. Finnish people would undoubtedly want to be neutral, clearly with all nato-propaganda. This is why they dare not hold a referendum aon a memebership but take these exercises unlawfully through the back door. Color revolutions can come also in the form of EU-membership in the 90*s after the Soviet Union fell.

Zo Fu

$5 device can disrupt GPS signal… But you know – Russia did it. Mainstream said so it must be true. http://www.jammerfromchina.com/product_images/r/926/JFC170121-8__16203__90685_zoom.jpg

AM Hants

Should not have got too close to Russian territory.

FlorianGeyer

Northern waters have always been a ships graveyard. :)

Jens Holm

Thats more then 1500 kilometers from Russia as well as it was inside a deep Norweigian Fjord.

Maps are censured and factfinding is not allowed, where You are – But babling nonsense is

Have You invented bow and arrows ?

AM Hants

Funny how NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says nought? Now why is that? Too close to the Russian borders, or nought to do with Russia?

Stoltenberg Avoids Delving Into GPS Jamming During NATO Mega Drill… https://sputniknews.com/military/201811131069752952-nato-gps-jamming/

By the way, I was not around 64,000 years ago, or living in Africa, where they invented the ‘bow and arrow’.

Jens Holm

I think it could be because Nato and affiliates will show, we are many we are and have the same oppinion about – or almost.

Thats my private oppinion.

AM Hants

I think it could be because Nato and affiliates will show, we are many and have the same oppinion about – or almost.

Just a shame those wonderful nations cannot speak the same language and only 5 of them pay the required 2% Nato fees.

For pure humour, Russia holds a basic exercise, involving 300,000 Forces, 36,000 land based vehicles, , 1,000 military aircrafts, 80 ships and submarines, without incident.

Nato holds a massive exercise, consisting of 50,000 Forces, 120 aircraft and as many as 70 ships converging this fall in Norway, and a few land based vehicles. With so many incicdents, before they even got started.

Jens Holm

We dont shoot scarecrows with tanks.

And be happy about it. Russians cant effort an escalation. We see it in Syria. Everytime Russia are empty in ammo, they ask for ceasefire.

They cant even effort building Armatas for themselves. Those are designed too expensive and made as in old days like handcraft Mercedes Benz or Cadilacs. For same reasons none others will buy them.

But they are good tanks. The best in the world – all 8 of the prototypes are. None in the the whole world even know if the specifications are like they say in combat.

Some might hope they actually are like the stolen Russian version of the Concorde, which hardly flew a year and only a few 100 km pr trip.

So be happy we use less money on war. I am for we should go up a little.

AM Hants

Reverse blame/mirror transposition.

Syria, funny thing is, Russia is legally in Syria, unlike Nato.

Armatas – might be a problem with other nations not buying them, when the export version is not on the market yet, is it?

Why China and India Want Russia’s New Armata Battle Tank… https://nationalinterest.org/blog/the-buzz/why-china-india-want-russias-new-armata-battle-tank-13092

Stolen Russian version of the Concorde???? ‘…

‘…The Tupolev TU-144 had only 55 commercial flights, from November 1977 to May 1978. ..’

Looks like you are confusing the Soviet Union with the Russian Federation. Remember, the Soviet Union fell in 1991. I do believe Leonid Brezhnev, led the Soviet Union, back in 1977/1978. Wasn’t he Ukrainian?

Jens Holm

The main center should be Bodoe, which is far south of Tromsø on Your map.

It would support mý oppinion, if You plottet in where the warship died. Our news has this link , where you can see a very good map http://nyheder.tv2.dk/udland/2018-10-25-kaempemaessig-nato-oevelse-skydes-i-gang-i-norge https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/6cf716557ddfa129706ce8d0a3b77463fa732ae54acee4c37878902ce0abcaf7.jpg

AM Hants

Your opinion???????

Jens Holm

Yes, the capseized navy vessel is landed exact where the northwestern corner of the red zone is in a fjord deep inside Norway there and also named as the geographocal center of the exerseize.

It has nothing to do with the maps of yours. If thats a treat or something Your ships in Murmans should be moved a couple of 100 km east as well teeling how peacefull, friendly and large You are.

And we do remeber You right now are deploying big misseles to Kaliningrad and we have ordered 4 Scud missile batteries for korvettes to try to protects from that enclave in the middle of Nato as well as many smaller missiles.

And we do recall Russians a month ago invited China warships into them in the Baltic sea as well.

Russians also fly as close as allowed in full speed close to Bornholm and sometimes open their transponders in the last seconds. I we were Russians, those were shot down for safety matters and several of them.

AM Hants

The map I posted showed how close Lapland and Finnmark, where the Nato exercise was allegedly staged, is to the Russia, specifically the territory of Murmansk. The frigate, besides comedy value, I had no interest in the location, as it was alleged to have left the exercise.

The Russian territory of Kaliningrad, which hosts a military base, has had to seriously raise it’s defences, owing to Nato repeatedly trying to get too close, with the intention of a full invasion.

Remember the Secretary of State, James Baker promising Gorbechev, that if he would be good and dismantle the Warsaw Pact, they would not move an inch into Eastern Europe? How many Nato bases have now moved into Eastern Europe? Major factor in Russia’s hypersonic weapons.

John Helmer: What The USS Donald Cook and Polish Navy Were Doing Off Kaliningrad When They Were Buzzed By the Russian Air Force Posted on April 18, 2016 by Lambert Strether… https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2016/04/john-helmer-what-the-uss-donald-cook-and-polish-navy-were-doing-off-kaliningrad-when-they-were-buzzed-by-the-russian-air-force.html

You can call me Al

Oh FFS, STFU Finland, you sound like the total moronic twats you are.

Barba_Papa

So they experienced GPS problems. Russia is said to have the technology to do so. It might be possible that Russia did this. Ergo, Russia did it. In any criminal court this whole chain of events, assumptions and conjecture would be thrown out and ridiculed. But as usual the MSM laps it up unquestionably.

John Whitehot

it depends on the court.

In a US court, everything is possible. (like a murder suspect being acquitted in a penal court and indicted in a civil one, for the same case).

It’s not that the US judiciary power is free from interference and can’t be pressurized into caving to political demands.

zman

Boy, when the west latches onto a meme, they really go all the way. ‘Russia (Putin) did it’ has really taken off and dragged common sense and ‘patriotism’ to new lows. Then again, it’s quite possible that Russia did do this. After all, if your neighbors are wanting a ‘real to life’ war game, they should have conditions as they might face in a real conflict, right?…or is all of NATOs training mere ‘feel good’ propaganda? Dumb question that. Russia might have just decided that they needed a little practice of their own, as a message to NATO. Either way, it’s a wake-up call for NATO and their abilities…or lack of.

Jens Holm

I dont think its like that and about Russia only. Its about internet makes a lot possible and we have to control and clean better.

And more control and cleaning do find more.

Jesus

Russian EW capabilities are the best, Nato’s forward deployment closer to Russia shows their equipment deficiencies/shortcomings and strategic incompetency.

CHUCKMAN

“Prime Minster Juha Sipila has come with a statement blaming Moscow for GPS failures during the recent NATO war games.”

This is quite possible.

If it was so, it would appear a brilliant move by Russia to use NATO’s own gigantic military games for a real-life demonstration of one of the weapons they could face.

It would have made a big impression in the cockpits and control centers of NATO.

Jens Holm

More like it would be a stupidity telling, what they can.

John Whitehot

even if it was true, which i doubt (much more likely their equipment simply failed) i wonder what they have to whine about.

they’ve had the opportunity to exercise under a situation of electronic warfare duress, the truth is that these pharisees are never happy with anything.

Bob

Suspect is NATO public relations spin in attempt to paper-over this NATO Trident Juncture naval-drill complete shambles:

https://russia-insider.com/en/natos-trident-juncture-drill-takes-its-toll-frigate-hit-tanker-runs-aground-prevent-sinking/ri25334

John Whitehot

Yes, it’s a realistic conclusion.

FlorianGeyer

Real soldiers can still read maps and the stars :)

John Whitehot

an analphatet, malaysian fisherman is able to navigate with the sun and one compass, you know, that thing with a needle pointing always north :D.

i’d be surprised if NATO personnel can find the latrines without using google maps (which is confirmed by articles on msm saying that the individuals involved in the exercise have been crapping all around norwegian towns, in addition of drinking dry all the stocks of anything alcoholic in a range of 200 miles)

FlorianGeyer

Using maps to travel with gives one a far broader view of the route and also opportunities to see sights that SatNav junkies seldom see :)

SatNavs in towns and cities can be useful though, but it is still better to look at the route on a map as well in my opinion.

Jens Holm

Actually Norweigians found Iceland, Greenland and America doing exact the same. And they did not use compas…

And You forgot stars.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

Aaah, those were the days when Norwegians were free and not a US butt-lick state. They even had the audacity to demand Danegeld from the wee English. Now they have become prime US arse-licks. How does it feel, Jens? Lick, lick, lick!!! Faster, faster, faster!

Sinbad2

Yeah they stumbled around in the dark, and got lucky, just like Columbus. Columbus thought he had landed in India?

Selbstdenker

Sorry, but they most probably used a twilight compass. http://rspa.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/470/2166/20130787

Jens Holm

Thanks for the good link about that possibility.

Sinbad2

“malaysian fisherman is able to navigate with the sun and one compass,”

Yeah, if they stay in sight of land.

You need a compass, an accurate clock and a sextant to navigate in open sea.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

The only stars these toy soldiers can read are those on the massive butts of the Kardassians!

Dušan Mirić

This is free of charge commercial for Russian equipment. Well, maybe not free of charge. We should ask the man how much Russians paid him :)

Bob

This statement presumably made as lame excuse for fact that Norwegian naval frigate on drill in Finnish NATO exercises managed to collide with a tanker – despite being on active military exercise was literally sunk by an unarmed and unrelated passing tanker – the sinking Norwegian naval vessel was was towed and beached to save it from going completely under. Norway’s naval finest on tour!

Kelli Hernandez

Blaming Russia for shitty NATO/US equipment. Lol

Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

lol i would be careful what i say if i were finland PM, since i am right next to russia

Sinbad2

If you look at the US GPS satellite orbits, you will notice that they are at maximum distance at the poles. So it would be much easier to jam GPS near the poles. Another example of poor American planning.

https://www.gps.gov/systems/gps/space/constellation.jpg

John Whitehot

It makes much more sense that the receiver is jammed, not the transmitter.

moreover, those sats aren’t geostationary, so they don’t linger near the poles.

Sinbad2

The orbits are elliptical and the apogee’s roughly align with the poles

JPH

Russia ought to charge Finland for creating realistic training conditions.

Sinbad2

Exactly the first thing Russia will do after an American sneak attack, is take out the US GPS satellites. That will leave the US unable to target Russia, whilst Russia can start shooting fish in a barrel. Arrogance is fatal in war, and America has arrogance to spare.

Hisham Saber

Russia wont wait for a U.S. sneak attack. They will respond at the slightest inclination of an attack.

Besides, NATO/U.S. would be suicidal to attack Russia. Russia is prepared.

Jens Holm

Russian should give Finland the stolen parts back in stead as well as giving them a harbour to the Arctic sea and Nikel.

Russians behave like thieve, where people should smile and gratefull, when at least some are given back.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

Stolen? Finland should not have been in bed with the Nazis during WW2 killing Russians. Do you really think the US/EU/NATO gangsters will give up their comfy lives so that Nazi allied Finland can get back “Vyborg” and other “stolen lands” they lost as a result of being WW2 L-O-O-O-O-O-S-E-R-S???

Jens Holm

If You go back in time it wasnt like that at all. Are You not allowed to use calender

STALIN ATTACKED Finland in 1939 and Nazis attacked by Barbarossa in june 1941.

No nazis in Finland apart from s few local ones and they were helped by Scandibavians from Sweden, Norway and Denmark to defend them.

And before the Russians as the only ones lost WW1 3 times many countries and among them Finland was liberated from the Tzars taking them by force.

So Russians were the agressors there as well as the whole territory incl. DDR.

The population in the Vyborg area was finnish and had been since we know.

Its only true Germans made a front against USSR because people in Finland by good reasons didnt want Russians back. By that nazis did get more support. and was helped by joining nazis from Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

How do you feel about Finland’s part in the siege of Leningrad during WW2, when millions starved? How has Finland atoned for their part in this barbaric act? Are you now expecting the NATO gangsters to die for Finland and recover the lost lands from Russia? Is that the game in Finland that is turning them into NATO slave state and US arse-lickers? Remember, you are now writing to a British Indian Hindu from London. I have never been to Russia but have been to free Ukraine 10 times before the US/EU/NATO instigated violent coup in 2014.

Smaug

Could be, it shouldn’t surprise or anger anyone. But I hope this doesn’t cause more hoopla than it should if it can be proven to have occurred.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

RF should be thanked for creating a realistic environment for the NATO gangsters to play with their toys. Frankly, the RF commanders should be fired for revealing any capabilities to the NATO gangsters, if these fairy stories turn out to be true.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

Why do these “leaders” sound so much like kids these days? Mum, dad, Putin ate my homework! Putin hacked my homework! Mummy, Putin ate my lunch! Weinnnn! Weinnnn! Weinnn! I really hope RF did interfere in the NATO gangsters games with their toys, but I would like EVIDENCE from these LYING leaders before accepting anything.

VeeNarian (Yerevan)

So, is this the alibi for NATO gangster incompetence??? “Just after they ended, an oil tanker collided with one of the Norwegian warships involved, in a fjord in southern Norway. The warship had been repeatedly warned of its collision course with the tanker, the BBC was told.” https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46178940 Is this a warship or a Royal Bathtub, deaf and blind and unable to speak any human language? Quack, quack, quack!!!

Selbstdenker

So, in an armed conflict you rely on the proper, undisturbed availability of your system, vital for positioning and targeting, and don’t think, that a potential adversary will try to render this system useless? Seriously? Come on! A military exercise is deemed to simulate what might happen in a conflict and train, how to overcome it. I was in signal intelligence, and our system was always used in exercises to train the soldiers to use alternative means to accomplish their targets when their standard means of communication was rendered unavailable. How are they train nowadays at NATO?

Jens Holm

Its second time.
