Fire Breaks Out At Oil Tanker Near Yemen After Suspected Houthi Attack

A Panama-flagged oil tanker was attacked in the Red Sea approximately 10 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port city of Mokha, British security firm Ambrey reported on May 18.

Ambrey said in an advisory note that radio communication they received indicated the oil tanker was hit by a missile and that a fire broke out onboard. The security firm added the tanker had received assistance and one steering unit was functional.

The firm’s advisory note also called on vessels in the vicinity of the area where the incident took place to exercise caution and report suspicious activity.

Earlier in the day, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported that a merchant vessel came under attack in the Red Sea some 76 nautical miles to the northwest of the Yemeni port city of al-Hodeida.

The captain “has confirmed sustaining slight damage after being struck by an unknown object on his port quarter,” the UKMTO said. “The vessel and crew are safe and continuing to its next port of call.”

The Houthis (Ansar Allah) have not yet acknowledged the attacks reported by UKMTO and Ambbrey, though it typically takes them hours to issue a claim.

Since last November, the Houthi, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the United States and the UK in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down four U.S. combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group. Dozens were killed by the strikes. However, the group continues to launch attacks at the same rate as before.
