The Armed Forces of Ukraine are retreating in the area of Avdeevka. The Stepovoye—Lastochkino—Severnoye defense line of the Ukrainian military to the west of the city was completely destroyed. Ukrainian forces lost control of all these villages.
The first reports about the Russian control of the village of Stepovoe (Petrovskoe) north of Avdeevka came in the afternoon of February 23. The Russian Ministry of Defense is yet to officially confirm the full control of the settlement, where the mop up operation continues. Meanwhile, the retreat of the Ukrainian grouping from Stepovoe is confirmed by various Russian, Ukrainian and foreign military sources. The battle for Stepovoye has been going on since October 2023 and ended with Russia’s victory.
The Russian military launched the assault on Stepovoe in an attempt to cut the roads used for the transfer of military supplies to the Ukrainian garrison in Avdeevka and contain Ukrainian manoeuvres in the region. The prolonged battle for the village allowed the Russian military to achieve these goals and launch the decisive assault on the northern streets of Avdeevks.
After the Russian military gained a foothold in the village, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were forced to retreat to Berdychi, where they are equipping new line of defense.

The drastic falling of the Ukrainian defense in the region is the result of the Russian victory in Avdeevka. On the northern flank, the Russian military has ended the mop up operation on the territory of the Coke and Chemical Plant. As a result, they expanded the zone of their control around the large industrial facility, threatening the AFU with encirclement of their stronghold in the village of Lastochkino.
On February 24, the Ukrainian military confirmed the withdrawal of the AFU from Lastochkino ‘in order to avoid encirclement’ of the remaining forces. The village was defended by several Ukrainian units, including the notorious 3rd Separate Assault Brigade (former neo-nazi battalion Azov).
While Ukrainian servicemen, who managed to survive in heavy battles for Avdeevka and Lastochkino, are retreating to the village of Orlovka, Russian flags are already waving on the streets of Lastochkino.
The battles on the outskirts of the village began almost immediately after the Russian victory in Avdeevka. The Ukrainian grouping in Lastochkino had to hide in the settlement under heavy Russian fire. Today, the Russian military is moping up the village, demining the streets as well as areas around it.

Lastochkino was not the last Russian victory over the past day. On the evening of February 24, Ukrainian sources reported the retreat of the AFU from the village of Severnoe, which was turned into a stronghold aimed to stop Russian offensive on the southern flank of Avdeevka. Russian military sources confirm the control of the main part of the village, where the mop up operation has already begun. The AFU are retreating to Tonenkoe.
Any footage from Severnoe is yet to confirm the reports. Given the Russian advance in Lastochkino, the positions of the Ukrainian grouping in the village, where the Russian assault began several days ago, has sharply deteriorated. Indeed, the Ukrainian military command, which tries its best to save the precious units amid the horrific losses on all the frontlines, is unlikely to continue the senseless defense in Severnoe, as well as in the fields between Severnoe and Lastochkino.
The Russian Ministry of Defense is likely to confirm Russian control of the newly captured villages in its daily briefing on february 25. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military is retreating to the new defense line in Berdychi-Semenovka-Orlovka-Tonenkoe. This is their main defense in the region after the fall of Avdeevka, which is already pounded by Russian artillery etc.
