First Murder Reported In Al-Hawl Camp After SDF Large-Scale Operation

The recent large-scale operation by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has apparently failed to restore law and order in the notorious al-Hawl camp in northeastern Syria.

On April 17, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that ISIS terrorists had murdered an Iraqi refugee in the camp, which is located in the eastern al-Hasakah countryside. The crime is the first since the end of the SDF security-humanitarian operation in the camp.

“The cells of the Islamic State organization have assassinated an Iraqi refugee in the first section of the al-Hawl camp, in al-Hasakah countryside, using a handgun equipped with a silencer,” the London-based monitoring group said in a report.

According to the group, two women were also injured during the attack. The SDF has not commented on the incident, so far.

More than 60,000 people, including thousands of foreigners, are being held in al-Hawl. Many of the camp’s residents are relatives of ISIS terrorists, or suspected members of the group.

The SDF large operation in al-Hawl came to an end earlier this month. 125 members of ISIS, including senior leaders, were apprehended by Kurdish fighters. Loads of weapons were also seized. Yet, the camp is still not safe.

The new murder is the 48th since the start of this year. The SDF itself warned before that its efforts are not enough to secure the camp. The Kurdish-led group demanded a international solution that would see all foreigners in the camp leave to their home countries.
