You need to reacquaint yourself with your junior school geography text books. Deserts are basically result of rain clouds meeting either wind patterns or mountain lines – that result in rain clouds repeatedly dumping the rain in one area – and leaving areas further beyond in long term dry states.

Im really concerned that my country, the US, will use this as a excuse to occupy more of Syria and Iraq. My biggest concern is the publicly stated wishes of both Syria and Iraq to normalize relations and expand border crossing with only their own troops on the border. With Mosel being stabilized the Iraqi Army plans to move West and occupy its own border without Saudi, UAE, NATO or US interference. The US may find its troops occupying land between the 2 countries without any legal standing to be there.

I said this in September 2015 (When Russia joined the war) the best move would be to seal the northern and south/eastern borders and contain the enemy as a first move. But they saw this as less important. They went after the prize of Aleppo even when the ISIS supply lines were still open. Now you have the Turks, Kurds, U.S and others going for a land grab after the SDF, Iranians, Hezbollah and Russians have done all the dirty work to rid Syria of the black flags. Bad strategic move.

It was not seen as less important It is the fact that the SAA was at breaking point and sealing the border would have likely taken the SAA manpower that stopped the fall of Damascus and the liberation of Aleppo.
