Five ISIS Attacks Target Syrian Service Members, Local Commander In Southern Region

Fighter of the Khalid ibn al-Walid Army in western Daraa

On May 19, ISIS claimed responsibility for five recent attacks in the governorates of Daraa and al-Quneitra in southern Syria.

In statements released by its news agency, Amaq, the terrorist group summarized the attacks as follows:

  • On May 18, a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) service member was shot and killed on a road between the towns of al-Sahoah and al-Musayfrah in eastern Daraa. Local sources confirmed ISIS’ claims.
  • On May 18, a local man working as a “spy” for the Military Intelligence Directorate (MID) was abducted from the town of al-Jeezah in eastern Daraa and then executed. Local sources confirmed ISIS’ claims revealing that the man was a rebel police commander.
  • On May 19, two SAA service members were shot and killed near the town of Kafr Shams in northern Daraa. Local sources confirmed ISIS’ claims revealing that at least one of the victims was an officer.
  • On May 19, a Syrian security officer was shot and killed near the town of al-Harah in the northern countryside of Daraa. Local sources confirmed ISIS’ claims.
  • On May 19, a SAA service member was shot and killed near the town of Khan Arnabeh in the al-Quneitra countryside. Local sources didn’t confirm ISIS’ claims.

These attacks became a notable threat for government forces in southern Syria. ISIS cells are working to expand their operations in the region.

The army is currently preparing to launch a large-scale security operation against local armed groups (not linked with ISIS) in Daraa. Reinforcements are being deployed in the governorate. The operation will likely begin within a few days, if the ongoing talks with the governorate’s locals fail to find a peaceful solution.
