On September 15, five Syrian service members were killed when militants from al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) attacked a position they were manning in the northern Lattakia countryside.
The militants first attacked the position, which is located on top of Abu Ali hill, with drones, then launched a raid and clashed with Syrian troops.
Syrian pro-government activists said that an officer of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and three soldiers were killed along with a warrant officer from the Military Intelligence Directorate in the drone attack and the following raid.
The deadly attack was the latest in a series of violations of the ceasefire agreement on the Greater Idlib region by HTS and its allies.
Earlier this month, a series of Syria and Russian strikes hit Greater Idlib. Some 111 militants were killed and at least 80 others were wounded in the strikes which were carried out in response to recent ceasefire violations by HTS and its allies. The violations included a tunnel bombing in the southern Idlib countryside on August 26 that reportedly claimed the lives of 11 soldiers of the SAA.
The strikes didn’t deter the terrorist groups, who attempted to launch two raids in the southern Idlib countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo on September 12. However, both attempts were thwarted by the SAA and several militants were killed.
The attack on Abu Ali hill will likely be met with a fierce response from the SAA and its allies. The Russian Aerospace Forces could launch airstrikes against Greater Idlib in the upcoming few days.
