A recent Iranian missile strike hit Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, damaging five United States Air Force aerial refueling tanker aircraft on the ground, The Wall Street Journal reported on March 13, citing two U.S. officials.

The aircraft were damaged but not destroyed, and no one was killed in that strike, according to the report, which noted that the tankers are being repaired.

The report didn’t reveal the type of the tankers hit, but most recent satellite imagery from Prince Sultan showed only KC-135 Stratotankers deployed there. Still, it can’t be ruled out that some of the U.S. Air Force more advanced KC-46 Pegasus tankers were there.

The air base, located in Al Kharj, is currently serving as a major hub for U.S. Air Force operations, with multiple E-3 Sentry airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft and E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) aircraft deployed there.

In recent days, the Saudi Ministry of Defense reported the interceptions of dozens of suicide drones and several missiles, as Iran escalated its strikes in response to the ongoing American-Israeli war.

The ministry announced the interception of a missile in Al Kharj over the past day, in addition to some 20 drones in nearby regions in the central and eastern regions of the kingdom.

A U.S. service member died after being seriously injured during an Iranian strike at a base in Saudi Arabia on March 1. This could very well be the strike reported by WSJ.

Satellite images shared recently by Iranian media showed impacts at two large hangars, one of them is located right next to the tarmac where U.S. Air Force aircraft are situated.

The latest report apparently angered U.S. President Trump, who on March 14 played down the damage caused by the Iranian strike on Prince Sultan.

“Yet again, an intentionally misleading headline by the Fake News Media about the five tanker planes that were supposedly struck down at an Airport in Saudi Arabia, and of no further use,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“In actuality, the Base was hit a few days ago, but the planes were not ‘struck’ or ‘destroyed.’ Four of the five had virtually no damage, and are already back in service. One had slightly more damage, but will be in the air shortly,” he continued

“None were destroyed, or close to that, as the Fake News said in headlines. The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal (in particular), and other Lowlife ‘Papers’ and Media actually want us to lose the War. Their terrible reporting is the exact opposite of the actual facts!,” the U.S. president added.

The WSJ report came out just a day after a KC-135 crashed in Iraq following an incident. All six crew members were killed. A second tanker of the same type that was involved in the incident was damaged, but managed to launch at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel. A single KC-135 could cost around $40 million.

Iran has so far managed to inflict some serious material losses on the U.S. military, aside from killing some 15 service members. As the war drags on, the losses will likely grow.
