On August 1, a former fighter of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) was assassinated in the southern Syrian governorate of Daraa.

The fighter, Ibrahim Saleh al-Falouji, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen while he was visiting the martyrs’ cemetery near Daraa city in the early morning. The gunmen managed to escape.

Al-Falouji reportedly fought in the ranks of the FSA’s al-Islam Dawn Division. The group was one of many supported by the U.S. Military Operation Center, MOC, in Jordan. Advanced weapons, including TOW anti-tank guided missiles, were supplied to the group.

According to local sources, al-Falouji refused to join the reconciliation process in Daraa in 2018. He also refused exile, thus he stayed illegally in Daraa. The few fighters who refused to reconcile or leave Daraa are either radicals or wanted for major offenses.

ISIS cells in Daraa may be behind the assassination of al-Falouji. The Syrian intelligence or local factions could be also responsible.

Many soldiers and local fighters were assassinated in Daraa in the last few months. A state of lawlessness is prevailing over Daraa as a result of poor coordination between government forces and local factions.

It’s much more likely he was killed by pro Russian forces, and they may have a good reason to want him dead. Recently the Russians started another recruitment campaign to entice more opposition fighters to join the Russian sponsored 5th army corps, and they’ve been moderately successful with more than 400 new recruits joining the ranks in the last few weeks, but I suspect that this guy that’s just been murdered, along with his pro US FSA friends, have actually been doing everything they can to stop the Russians recruiting more soldiers, so I think that would be more than enough reason to have him killed. I’m pretty sure this guy and his friends are the ones who’ve been closing the checkpoints between Daraa and Quneitra and stopping Russia’s new recruits making it to the recruitment centres, but he won’t be anymore. Iran’s also making it difficult for Russia too now, they’ve opened up a new recruitment centre to enlist more men into the Iranian backed 1st 2nd and 3rd army corps, but since the Russian’s have more money and more influence, I think they won’t be anywhere near as successful as Russia was.

Syrian intelligence?

It’s more than possible, though my money’s still on the 5th army corps if I had to bet on one group being the most likely suspects.
