On May 28, the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) announced that it had eliminated the mastermind behind ISIS assassinations in Turkish-occupied areas in northern Syria during a joint operation with the so-called Free Syrian Police.

In an official statement, the SNA said that a joint force had raided a hideout in the town of al-Bab where ISIS assassination commander was taking shelter. Information obtained from two members of the terrorist group, who were apprehended in a recent operation, led Turkish-backed militants to the hideout.

During the raid, heavy clashes broke out. ISIS commander, whose identity is yet to be revealed, was eventually killed. Moreover, one of the commander’s guards blew himself up with a suicide belt that he was wearing. Turkish-backed militants also sustained losses.

“After clashes that lasted for more than an hour, two were martyred, one from the SNA and the second from police forces, seven others were injured,” the SNA’s statement reads.

The operation came following a series of assassinations in al-Bab and its surroundings. ISIS claimed responsibility for most of these assassinations which targeted civilians, militants and even journalists.

Last month, two members of the Free Syrian Police were shot and killed in the outskirts of al-Bab on the same day. ISIS cells were reportedly behind the two attacks.

ISIS maintains a strong presence in Turkish-occupied areas in northern and northeastern Syria. Some of the Turkish-backed militants present there are former fighters and commanders of the terrorist group.
