On November 24th, the USS John McCain Arleigh Burke-class destroyer crossed the Russian border in the south of Primorsky Krai, the Defense Ministry said.
“The large anti-submarine ship of the Pacific Fleet” Admiral Vinogradov “stopped the violation of the state border of the Russian Federation by the US Navy destroyer John McCain in the Gulf of Peter the Great,” the release said.
It is specified that the Americans went two kilometers beyond the line. After that, the Admiral Vinogradov Udaloy-class destroyer via the international communication channel warned the foreign warship about the inadmissibility of such actions.
A warning was also issued that the Russian warship could potentially employ a ramming maneuver to drive out the intruder.
After that, the USS John McCain immediately went into neutral waters and did not make repeated attempts to enter Russian territorial waters.
The Admiral Vinogradov warship continues to monitor the American ship, and the Russian Steregushchy-class corvette Sovershennyy also joined in.
According to the US side, this was a freedom of navigation operation near Russia.
“This freedom of navigation operation (“FONOP”) upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea recognized in international law by challenging Russia’s excessive maritime claims.”
The US also said that it would continue doing so.

Back in 2017, the USS John S. McCain destroyer collided with a tanker ship off the coast of Singapore. The accident took lives of 10 of its crew members and left five others injured.

US knew perfectly well where the border line was with modern GPS, looks like they were testing what they could get away with.

It has nothing to do with GPS spoofing. Americans like to remind everyone about the UNCLOS which recognizes a 10 nautical mile territorial water belonging to the littoral countries from their general base shoreline. The same convention also recognizes that some bodies of water that are inside the general shoreline as the country’s internal water though that body of water may be larger than 10nm.
This is what is happening here. If you take a look at a map, Russia considers the Peter the Great gulf as its internal water (pretty clear if you connect the shorelines from both sides of the gulf’s mouth). The US claims that the Russian territorial waters are limited to 10nm from the actual, physical shoreline of the peninsula and islands, not the base shoreline (the median of actual shore). That’s the reason they enter Russian waters and claim they are in international waters and they are using their right of freedom of navigation.
In reality, the US doesn’t recognize UNCLOS for itself. It’s nothing but provocation and testing the reaction of the Russians. Hypocrisy at its finest as per usual from the US government.

With Russia’s borders being constantly tested, I don’t see why they shouldn’t take an incident like this more seriously. Perhaps they could reassess their diplomatic arrangement with the US. Reduce the Embassy to one each, with minimal staff. Retaliate to a provocative incident to the point it embarrasses the US for harassing and moving closer in the first place.
In times like these, they should be especially more vocal about the deterioration of relations.

It’s been game on for a while now. I was in one road block incident on Capitol Hill in Seattle with police officers standing there watching it. As protesters were milling around the stopped vehicles. I was able to get turned around and drive out of it before getting trapped in the grid lock.
Eventually the police disbursed it. The protesters would have been more aggressive if the police weren’t there. What’s going to happen when the police aren’t there will depend on the jurisdiction. In some areas it will be favorable to the anarchists, in others to the their victims.
If you can’t drive out of the road block. Then you have two choices. Call the police and hope that they show up in time. While the protesters attack your car, if they do, and stay in it until they get you out of it to assault and possibly kill you. Or get out of it once it’s stopped. And deal with them by either holding your ground or attempting to disengage.
Whether they’re armed, in a number of cases they have been, will determine what your options realistically are. And even if they aren’t armed with guns. Other items have been used as potentially deadly weapons. If they’re unarmed you’re still probably outnumbered. And unarmed people can still injure or kill you.
If you’re armed with a gun. The nuclear option is to shoot your way out of it once other options expire. If you’re not. You can try to use the vehicle as a weapon. There really are no good choices. How the engagement unfolds will depend on the circumstances.
