From Offense To Defense: Saudi-Backed Forces Repel Houthi Attack In Yemen’s Hajjah (Photos)

On March 5, the 5^th Military District of the pro-Saudi Yemeni Armed Forces repelled a new attack by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the northwestern Yemeni province of Hajjah.

In a statement, the force said that the Houthis’ attack targeted positions near the district center of Harad and the town of Bani Hassan in the district of Abs. The attack was repelled after heavy clashes with Houthi fighters.

Saudi-led coalition warplanes supported the forces of the 5^th Military District. Between March 5 and 6, more than 30 airstrikes targeted Houthi forces in Hajjah. According to the coalition, the Houthis sustained many casualties and lost more than 16 vehicles.

In February, the 5^th Military District, backed by other proxies of the Saudi-led coalition, launched a large-scale attack on Houthi forces in Harad district center. However, the attack failed. The Houthis managed to hold onto the district center and its outskirts.

Now, the Houthis are on the offensive. Saudi-led coalition proxies in Hajjah, including the forces of the 5^th Military District, have been counducting defensive operations only.

The Saudi-led coalition’s intense airstrikes on Houthi forces in Hajjah indicate that the 5^th Military District and other coalition proxies may be preparing for a new attack on Harad district center. The Houthis’ recent operations in the province appears to be preemptive attacks, meant to disturb the plans of the coalition and its proxies.
