From Snake Island to Rivne: Expanding Geography of Massive Russian Strikes In NATO Summit Prelude

In a sweeping overnight operation, Russian forces unleashed another coordinated wave of missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, striking military airfields, logistics hubs, and energy infrastructure in at least 10 regions, from the western city of Rovno to the southern port of Odessa. The attack, one of the largest in recent weeks, combined hypersonic “Kinzhal” missiles, Kh-101 cruise missiles, and swarms of Shahed-type drones, demonstrating Moscow’s ability to sustain daily high-intensity, long-range strikes despite Ukrainian claims of near-total interception.

The Air Defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine traditionally asserted that their air defenses intercepted 479 out of 499 incoming threats, including 277 drones, 10 Kh-101 cruise missiles, 4 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, 2 Kh-22, 2 Kh-31P, 1 Kh-35 missiles—an improbable almost 100% success rate that can be easily dismissed as propaganda. Independent reports suggest that while Ukrainian forces downed a significant number of drones, multiple missiles and UAVs struck critical targets, causing fires, explosions, and disruptions all around the country.

Over the past day, Russian strikes were recorded in the DPR, Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporozhie, Kherson, Rivne, Poltava, Chernihiv, Odessa, Kyiv, Cherkassy, Vinytsya, Zhitomir, Dnepropetrovsk, Kirovograd regions and in the Black Sea.

Russian drones and missiles continue pounding western Ukrainian regions for several days in a row. Polish aircraft took off on alert during at night, as their operational command announced the activity of Russian aviation.

Last night, one of the most significant strikes targeted the town of Dubno in the Rivne region. The target was the local military airfield, a key logistics hub and maintenance site for Ukrainian aircraft, including Western-supplied F-16s. According to preliminary estimations, at least 14 drones struck the territory of the airfield and destroyed fuel depots, radar installations, air defense positions, command post and aircraft shelters. Preliminary assessments indicate damage to an An-26 cargo aircraft, an Su-27 fighter jet that was under maintenance, along with the destruction of ground support equipment. The attack temporarily degraded the airfield’s operational capacity, complicating Ukraine’s ability to deploy and service its dwindling fleet of combat aircraft. More Russian strikes were reported across the western Rivne region, including drone and missile strikes in the city of Rivne itself.

According to preliminary reports, more airfields, including Hostomel in the Kyiv region and Shkolny in the Odessa region came under attacks last night. Near Kyiv, Hostomel Airfield reportedly came under Kinzhal missile fire, though Ukrainian officials denied significant damage. Neptune missile systems were reportedly destroyed in Odessa. More explosions thundered in the capital Kyiv, near Bila Tserkva. In the south Russian strikes pounded Ukrainian military along the Black Sea coast in the Odessa region.

In Myrhorod, Poltava region, a missile and drone barrage targeted what Ukrainian sources described as a logistics node, though secondary explosions suggested possible ammunition storage. The city hosts another large airfield used by the Air Force of Ukraine.

Russian forces hammered military concentrations near the frontlines. In Pechenihy, Kharkiv region, at least three drone strikes ignited a large fire at a sawmill doubling as a military supply point, another drone struck the point of temporary deployment of the 92nd Infantry Brigade’s logistics platoon.

Another confirmed target was the battalion tactical group of the 18th National Guard Brigade deployed near Nikolaypolie in the Dnepropetrovsk region. As a result of the precision drone strike, the fortified stronghold was destroyed.

In a rear attack in the Black Sea, Russian Tu-22M3 bombers launched Kh-22 anti-ship missiles at a self-lifting drilling platform near Snake Island previously used for electronic warfare and reconnaissance bu the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The platform, once a key node in Ukraine’s maritime surveillance network, was disabled.

The strikes reflect a shift in Russian tactics, moving from sporadic large-scale barrages to sustained, daily attacks aimed at overwhelming Ukrainian air defenses and degrading military-industrial capacity. The use of drones as decoys, followed by high-speed missiles, appears designed to exhaust interception resources before precision strikes land.

As NATO prepares for its upcoming summit, Russia’s latest strikes signal a deliberate escalation, proving that no part of Ukraine is beyond reach. While Kyiv insists its defenses remain robust, the fires across the country tell a different story—one of a grinding campaign where even partial successes inflict devastating cumulative damage.
