FSA Group Embedded Within SDF Says It Lost Fighters In Ain Issa

The Northern Democratic Brigade (NDB) acknowledged on April 3 that two of its fighters were killed in the town of Ain Issa in northern Raqqa.

According to the group, which is embedded within the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the fighters, Mohamad Khalil al-Mustafa and Bahaa al-Din Mohamad Zaghir, were killed in the town’s Raqqa square on April 2.

Opposition sources claimed that the fighters were killed in clashes with the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) or in an artillery strike on Ain Issa. The NDB, however, didn’t confirm any of these claims.

The NDB is one of the few Free Syrian Army (FSA) groups which joined the SDF. The group, which was originally known as the al-Qa’qa’ Brigade, was formed in 2013 in Idlib. In 2014, radical factions expelled the group from the northwestern governorate.

The group’s fighters and commanders took refuge in northeast Syria, where they forged an alliance with Kurdish forces, mainly the People’s Protection Units (YPG).

Recently, the Turkish military intensified its attacks in northern and northeast Syria, targeting not only the SDF but also Syrian Arab Army (SAA) troops. These hostile acts could lead to a new escalation in these regions.
