On February 17, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced that it had thwarted a plot by ISIS targeting a chemical facility in the Kaluga Region.
In a statement, the security service said that the two terrorists responsible for the terror plot were killed. They both put up armed resistance and suffered fatal wounds from return fire. There were no casualties among security officers or civilians.
“A terrorist attack has been foiled in the Kaluga Region, where two Central Asian natives planned to use an improvised explosive device and incendiaries to set fire to tanks containing fuel and lubricants at a chemical facility,” the statement reads.
The FSB added that terrorists had pledged allegiance to ISIS and planned to leave for the armed conflict zone in Syria after committing the crime.
An explosives laboratory was found at the terrorists hideout, as well as a ready-to-use powerful homemade explosive device, petrol bombs, firearms and ammunition.
According to the FSB, a criminal case has been opened under Articles 30.1 and 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code (preparations for a terrorist attack).
The activities of ISIS and other terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, increased on Russian territory after the start of the special military operation in Ukraine. It is still unclear if these groups are receiving some form of foreign support to destabilize the situation in Russia.
